2019 Heisman Trophy Odds – The Favorites

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson Tigers (+300)

Lawrence was handed the reins to the Clemson offense as a true freshman, and he wasted no time showing why most NFL teams would select him with the No. 1 overall pick right now. He topped 3,000 yards and fired 30 touchdowns compared to just four interceptions. More importantly, he shredded the vaunted Alabama defense for 347 yards and three scores as he led the Tigers to a national title. Lawrence has all the tools, and now he has the full attention of every Heisman voter after last year. Surrounded by weapons at Clemson and with a year of experience, a monster campaign could be on tap.

Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide (+350)

He made things look easy for much of the year, finishing with 3,966 yards, 43 touchdowns and just six interceptions despite resting in the fourth quarter on a regular basis throughout the regular season. Tagovailoa did struggle a bit against Clemson in the National Championship Game, but he is going to pick apart defenses more often than not, and he can’t help but put up huge numbers with all the talent around him at Alabama. After finishing second in the Heisman voting last year, Tagovailoa will be right back in the thick of the conversation again in 2019.

Jake Fromm, QB, Georgia Bulldogs (+550)

Fromm wasn’t asked to throw a ton last year, but he carved up defenses when did put the ball in the air. He completed 207 of his 307 passes for 2,761 yards, 30 touchdowns and six interceptions, and with another year of experience, he should be allowed to fire away even more in 2019. Perhaps most importantly, Fromm will be under center for a team that is expected to contend for a playoff spot and a national championship. He will have plenty of chances to make big statements on big stages, and a Heisman moment or two could vault him to the head of the pack.

Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin Badgers (+900)

How do you follow up a freshman campaign where you run for 1,977 yards on 6.7 yards per carry and 13 touchdowns? If you are Taylor, you lead the country with 2,194 rushing yards on 7.1 yards per carry and score 16 times. Behind an always stout Wisconsin offensive line, Taylor should top 2,000 yards again in 2019. The numbers will likely make him a sure-fire Heisman finalist, but probably needs some record-breaking performances to vault ahead of all the top quarterbacks.

Travis Etienne, RB, Clemson Tigers (+950)

While Clemson was loaded with offensive weapons, Etienne is clearly the most explosive of the bunch. He rushed for a school-record 24 touchdowns and added a couple of receiving scores, as well. He also ran for 1,659 yards while averaging a ridiculous 8.1 yards per carry. If anything, Etienne’s role should expand in 2019, and 2,000-plus yards and 20-plus scores are clearly not out of the question. His biggest hurdle to the Heisman Trophy could end up be the guy handing him the ball, quarterback Trevor Lawrence. If Lawrence is just good and not special, Etienne could pounce.
