The Plaxico Burress Saga

Well if you haven’t heard, Plaxico Burress plead guilty today to illegal gun possession in New York City and will receive 2 years jail time in the plea deal. Faced with 3 1/2 years if convicted, he decided to bite the bullet so to speak, and start his sentence. Obviously, the law is strict in New York and given his celebrity profile, there was no way the DA and mayor were going to let him walk without any jail time. It seems a little harsh to me, but I’ll spare you the editorial on inconsistent sentencing in the courts until I take my bar exam.

Plaxico, who is a talented receiver, has a history of being a tool and really has no one to blame but himself for this predicament. First of all, the guy LIVES in the New York area and the NFL tells players to be careful about weapons and permits so I’m sure he was either aware of the law in the city, or, he felt he was special and would be given special treatment. Ahhhh…..wrong!

The other question to ask is, why did he feel the need to carry the gun in the first place? Memo to Plax: You are a millionaire athlete, hire a body guard….. or, better yet, if you need a gun to go someplace, don’t go there. It’s simple really….
