2018 NFL NFC South Odds & Expert Picks/Predictions – NFC South Division Forecast

1. New Orleans Saints(+135 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – Saints head coach Sean Payton got his team back on track last season finishing 11-5 overall after finishing 7-9 in each of the previous three seasons. Payton has himself a talented roster that is a legit Super Bowl contender this season as there is difference making talent on both sides of the ball. Future Hall of Fame quarterback Drew Brees continues to run the offense and he’s coming off of another solid season last year that saw him toss for 4334 yards and 23 touchdowns against just 8 interceptions. Brees has plenty of help on offense led by 2nd year star running back Alvin Kamara who is a threat to score from anywhere on the field. Kamara was a 3rd round pick out of Tennessee in 2017 but burst on the NFL scene by averaging 6.1 yards per carry which led all back in the NFL with at least 120 carries. Wide receiver Michael Thomas is Brees’ top receiving threat and caught 104 balls for 1245 yards and 5 touchdowns last year. The Saints finished 2nd in the NFL in total offense last year and should be in the top 5 easily again this season. The defense finished 17th in total defense last year and should be around the middle of the pack again in 2018.

2. Atlanta Falcons(+150 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – The Falcons suffered from a little Super Bowl loss hangover last season as they struggled to finish 10-6 overall and sneak into the NFC Playoffs. However, the Falcons went on the road and upset the LA Rams in the Wild Card round and gave the Philadelphia Eagles a scare in the Divisional Round before losing in Philly. The Falcons look to be ready to make another playoff run this year as they have a talented roster on both sides of the ball. Veteran quarterback Matt Ryan is back to run the show and has talent all around him with wide out Julio Jones, running back Devonta Freeman and 1st round NFL draft pick Calvin Ridley at his disposal. The Falcons finished 8th in total offense last season and we think they should be slightly improved this season. Defensively, the Falcons finished 9th overall last season and should challenge for another top 10 finish this season.

3. Carolina Panthers(+250 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – The Panthers are coming off of a strong 11-5 season last year that saw them make the NFC Playoffs before losing to the New Orleans Saints in the Wild Card round. Cam Newton did not have his best season last year as he finished with just 22 touchdowns against 16 interceptions but the guy still played a big part in getting the Panthers into the playoffs and we feel gets a lot of heat that is not warranted. The guy can ball. Newton has a new offensive coordinator this year in Norv Turner who has a history of being a good offensive coordinator and has worked with some of the best in the business. Look for Newton to get back to the form that made him a MVP in 2015 and for the Panthers offense to be improved from the unit that finished just 19th in the NFL in total offense last season. On defense the Panthers should once again be a top 10 unit and on par with the unit that finished 7th in total defense in 2017.

4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers(+1000 odds to win NFC South at Bovada) – Head coach Dirk Koetter is on the hot seat after the Bucs finished just 5-11 last season after going 9-7 in his first season. Koetter looks like a guy that could not motivate a dog to jump onto a meat wagon and his team tends to play with no edge on the field. Add that to the fact that the Bucs have a mediocre roster at best and a quarterback in Jameis Winston that has failed to live up to expectations and you have another terrible season on the horizon in Tampa Bay in 2018. The big problem for Koetter and the Bucs is not the offense that finished 9th in total offense last season but it is the dreadful defense that finished a dead last 32nd in the NFL in total defense. The defense is pure garbage and we don’t see much improvement this season although we do like the trade for former New York Giants defense end Jason Pierre-Paul to help the pass rush some.
