2020 Fan Shield 500 Odds & Predictions: Favorites and Bad Bets at Phoenix Raceway

2020 Fan Shield 500 Odds & Predictions – Favorites and Bad Bets at Phoenix Raceway: The NASCAR Cup Series wraps up its West Coast swing this weekend with a trip to Phoenix Raceway. The low-banked, one-mile oval will play host to Sunday’s Fan Shield 500, the first race of two races at the track in 2020 and the first flat track event of the 2020 season.

Plenty of big names have had success at Phoenix over the years, but flat tracks seem to lend themselves to extended runs of dominance by certain drivers, and Phoenix has been no exception. There is a small group of drivers who have piled up incredible numbers here, and you can feel pretty confident focusing your bets on just a couple of drivers for Sunday’s Fan Shield 500 at Phoenix Raceway.

Favorites to Bet

Kyle Busch (7/2)

Busch righted the ship with a runner-up effort at Phoenix last weekend, and he should stay hot in the desert Sunday. Since the start of the 2015 season, he has eight top-five finishes in nine starts at Phoenix to go along with a series-best 2.9 average finish. Busch has led at least 69 laps six times in that same stretch, and over the last two years, he has two wins and two second-place finishes in the four races, leading 100-plus laps three times. I recommend investing heavily in Busch this weekend.

Kevin Harvick (6/1)

Harvick’s dominance at Phoenix has been something special, and for his career, he is a nine-time winner at the track. In 12 starts at the track since joining Stewart-Haas Racing, he has never finished outside the top 10, posting a 3.42 average finish and 10 top-five finishes. More importantly, Harvick has five wins at Phoenix with SHR, and he led more than 30 laps seven times, leading more than 130 laps five times.

Denny Hamlin (6/1)

He is one of the top flat track drivers in the series, so it is no surprise that he has been successful at Phoenix. Hamlin ranks third in points scored over the last 10 races in the desert, logging three top-five finishes in his last four starts. Last year, he logged a fifth-place finish in the March race before dominating the fall event, leading 143 laps on his way to his second Phoenix win. Hamlin is a strong bet at 6/1.

Chase Elliott (12/1)

Elliott finished dead last at Phoenix last fall, but don’t let the final result fool you. He finished second and third in the two stages and was a major player for the win until he was caught up in a wreck late in the race. He has four Top 10s in eight starts at Phoenix overall, including a pair of top-three finishes. Elliott has also led double-digit laps in three of the last six races here. He always seems to be fast at flat tracks, and with the speed the Hendrick Motorsports Chevys are showing so far in 2020, Elliott could be the steal of the weekend among the frontrunners at 12/1.

Big Name to Avoid

Martin Truex Jr. (9/2)

Truex hasn’t been bad at Phoenix by any meas. In fact, he was the runner-up here last March, and he has four finishes of sixth or better in his last five starts at the track. On the flip side, he has led just 11 total laps in that same stretch, and he has only led laps in four of his 28 starts overall. Throw in the rash of mistakes the No. 19 team has been making on pit road thus far in 2020, and I have a tough time backing him at 9/2 when you have proven Phoenix winners getting longer odds.
