2019 Camping World 400 Picks & Predictions: Value Bets and Sleepers at Chicagoland Speedway

2019 Camping World 400 Picks2019 Camping World 400 Picks & Predictions – Value Bets and Sleepers at Chicagoland Speedway: The Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series heads to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend, and Sunday’s Camping World 400 will be the sixth race of the 2019 season held at a mile-and-a-half oval. I point this out because it is the most common layout on the schedule, and year in and year out, the same drivers and teams tend to run well across all the 1.5-mile tracks.

Given the importance of both aerodynamics and horsepower, it is not surprising that the top drivers from the top teams tend to dominate at these tracks. However, you can still find some solid value bets by targeting the No. 2 or No. 3 drivers for the powerhouse organizations.

With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at my favorite value bets and sleepers for the Camping World 400 at Chicagoland Speedway.

2019 Camping World 400 Picks & Predictions: Value Bets and Sleepers at Chicagoland Speedway

Value Bets

Aric Almirola (30/1)

Running near the front hasn’t been an issue for Almirola. In fact, he has finished 12th or better in all five races at 1.5-mile ovals this year, posting a 9.0 average finish in those starts. His issue has been turning all those top-10 finishes into wins, but Chicagoland just might be a track where he can get over the hump. Almirola had a great car in this race last season, leading 70 laps and winning Stage 1 before a pair of loose wheels derailed his afternoon. At 30/1, you may want to take a chance that he can finish what started out to be a dominant showing at Chicagoland last season.

Alex Bowman (30/1)

Bowman has been one of the hottest drivers in the series in recent weeks, and he has been particularly impressive at the mile-and-a-half tracks. He led 63 laps and finished second at Kansas, and he was leading that race until an overtime restart. The next week, Bowman led eight laps and finished seventh at Charlotte. It is also worth note that Bowman has finished in the top 10 in both of his starts at Chicagoland for Hendrick Motorsports. With a history of success at this track and some newfound speed, he could be a due for a breakthrough win Sunday. At 30/1, there is plenty of incentive to find out.

William Byron (80/1)

Another year of experience and the addition of crew chief Chad Knaus has done wonders for Byron, who has seen his average finish improve by 6.2 spots compared to his rookie season. He has really made some strides at the mile-and-a-half tracks, posting a 13.6 average finish in the five races so far. Perhaps more importantly, Byron has cracked the top 10 in two of the last three races at the 1.5-mile ovals, and he has led laps in four of the five, leading double-digit laps three times. The youngster is only getting better, and he has already shown he can run up front at tracks like Chicagoland. It is only a matter of time before Byron grabs that first win, and at 80/1, you may to see if it happens this weekend.

Sleeper Special

Chris Buescher (300/1)

Buescher already owns one upset win in his career, stealing a victory at Pocono with pit strategy in a fog-shortened race in 2016. Based on the surprising speed he has shown at the 1.5-mile ovals in 2019, Buescher could be poised to slay the Goliaths of NASCAR again this weekend. He has a 12.6 average finish in the five races at the mile-and-a-half tracks this year, and his three top-10s in those races are tied for the fourth most in the series. Yes, he drives for a small team, but the results speak for themselves. Buescher and his team have a setup that is working for them at tracks like Chicagoland, and at 300/1, why not throw a few bucks his way.
