2013 Great Clips/Grit Chips 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Kyle Busch the +250 Favorite

2013-Great-Clips-300-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 Great Clips/Grit Chips 300 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Kyle Busch the +250 Favorite: The Nationwide Series heads to Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend for a Saturday night race on Labor Day weekend. Since the Cup Series is also in Atlanta, plenty of drivers tend to pull double duty, and this year is no exception. Among the big names doing double duty this weekend are series wins leader Kyle Busch and former series champ Kevin Harvick. Harvick in particular will likely be plenty motivated after leading 157 of the 195 laps at Atlanta last year but failing to win after a controversial caution late in the race. NASCAR threw a caution flag for what appeared to be a water bottle that Brad Keselowski threw out the window of his car. Keselowski then pushed eventual winner Ricky Stenhouse Jr. past Harvick on the final restart, leading to some heated words in the post-race press conference.

The Favorites

He will make his first start in the Nationwide Series in quite a while, and Kevin Harvick couldn’t pick a better track to make his return. In his last six starts at Atlanta, he has compiled a series-leading 2.7 average finish. Harvick has one victory and two second-place finishes during the stretch, and he has finished fourth or better in all six starts.

Although Kyle Busch has actually never won a Nationwide race at Atlanta, overlooking him this weekend would be a huge mistake. For one, he has finished second in four of his nine starts at the track, including three times in the last four races. More importantly, Busch’s nine wins in 2013 are five more than any other driver in the series.

Every driver that has been behind the wheel of the Penske Racing No. 22 car has been fast, and Joey Logano will get other turn this weekend. He has already accounted for two of the team’s seven wins, and in two Nationwide starts at Atlanta, he has a pair of sixth-place finishes. Logano also has 20 career Nationwide wins and should have no problem contending for another victory for a team that is leading the series’ owner standings.

The Dark Horses

He made his debut at Atlanta last year, and Austin Dillon got off to a fast start by notching a sixth-place finish. Meanwhile, the young driver has shown a natural feel for the fast, 1.5-mile ovals, and both of his career victories have come at tracks with the same layout as Atlanta. Dillon has been at or near the top of the standings all year, and he should be in the mix for the win this weekend.

While he has never won at Atlanta, Justin Allgaier is definitely trending in the right direction. He has a 10.3 average finish in four starts at the track, and he has improved his result in all four starts. Allgaier has finished sixth and fifth in his last two starts at AMS so a win isn’t out of the question if he continues his trend of improvement.

Sleeper Special

Thanks to a recent hot stretch, Sam Hornish Jr. has climbed back to the top of the point standings. In the last six races, he has finished third or better four times, including three second-place finishes. Meanwhile, Hornish’s lone victory of the year came at Las Vegas, and Atlanta has the same 1.5-mile layout as Vegas. After a career-best ninth-place finish at Atlanta last year, Hornish could make the jump to legit contender this weekend.

Big Name to Avoid

Although he is actually driving for the No. 6 Roush Fenway Racing team that won at Atlanta last year, Trevor Bayne has never had much success at the track. In three starts, he has never cracked the top 15 and has compiled a dismal 24.3 average finish. More concerning is the fact that Bayne has gotten worse in every start at Atlanta.
