2013 Camping World RV Sales 301 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the Favorite

2013-Camping-World-RV-Sales-301-Odds-Predictions-and-Free-Picks2013 Camping World RV Sales 301 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the Favorite: The Cup Series heads to New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend, and the flat, 1.0-mile oval has been known to produce some exciting outcomes over the years. The lack of banking makes track position vital, and teams are always gambling on different tire and fuel strategies. In fact, the driver that has taken the white flag has run out of gas before reaching the checkered flag twice in the last three years. Throw in some beating and banging and the occasional rain shower, and you never know what exactly you will get.

Last summer, the Joe Gibbs Racing duo of Kyle Busch and Denny Hamlin dominated most of the race, leading a combined 222 of the 301 laps. However, Kasey Kahne took advantage of some questionable pit strategy on the part of Hamlin to score the victory. Hamlin led a race-high 150 laps, but his decision to take four tires on the final stop instead of two left him mired deep in traffic. He sliced his way through the field to second, but in the meantime, Kahne built a big enough cushion to hang on for the win over the charging Hamlin.

The Favorites

Since he joined the Cup Series in 2005, no driver has been better at New Hampshire than Denny Hamlin. His 7.9 average finish at the track is the best of any driver, and he has two wins and three second-place finishes in 14 starts. More importantly, Hamlin has been even stronger at New Hampshire recently. He has logged four top-three finishes in the last five races at the track, including finishes of second and first last season.

Flat tracks have always been one of Tony Stewart’s specialties, and New Hampshire is no exception. He is a three-time winner at the track, and he has finished second on five other occasions. Stewart has been particularly stout at New Hampshire since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. In eight starts with the team, he has five top-five finishes, including a win and two runner-up efforts.

He rolls into this weekend’s race tied for the series lead with four wins, and Jimmie Johnson could have as many as seven if not for some late-race restart issues. He is also a three-time winner at New Hampshire, and he is one of four drivers with a driver rating of more than 100 at the track. Johnson has won two of the four flat tracks race in 2013, and he could easily make it three-for-five this weekend.

The Dark Horses

He is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and Kasey Kahne is just starting to emerge as a stud at New Hampshire. He joined Hendrick Motorsports in 2011, and he has compiled a 6.7 average finish in four starts at the track since then. Kahne finished in the top five in both races at New Hampshire last season, and his victory last summer probably won’t be his last.

It has been a rough couple of years for Kurt Busch, but he has really hit his stride with Furniture Row Racing lately. He has finished sixth or better in the three races leading up to New Hampshire, and is also a three-time winner at the flat track. Busch has finished sixth or better in five of his last 10 starts at New Hampshire, and for the first time in a long time, he is running well enough to win races.

Sleeper Special

It has been a relatively quiet year for Ryan Newman, but New Hampshire always seems to bring out the best in him. He is a three-time winner at the track, and he has been a consistent contender at New Hampshire since joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009. He has finished in the top 10 in six of his eight starts with the team, winning the summer race in 2011. No matter how uncompetitive he may seem, Newman can never be counted at New Hampshire.

Big Name to Avoid

Although he is one of the bigger names in the series, Carl Edwards has never been all that tough at New Hampshire. He is winless in 17 starts at the track, and he has only finished in the top 10 in three of his starts. Edwards has won and can win races at a lot of tracks, but New Hampshire isn’t on the list right now.
