The true title contenders have begun to emerge, and the championship picture could get even clearer after the series visits Charlotte Motor Speedway this weekend. It will be the second consecutive race at a 1.5-mile track, and the same drivers that ran well at Kansas last weekend should run well this weekend. There are two more races at 1.5-mile tracks remaining after Charlotte as well, which means it is imperative for title hopefuls to find a setup that works sooner rather than later.

Last fall, Kyle Busch seemed poised to finally get his first career Cup win at Charlotte. He led 217 of the 334 laps and successfully held of all comers on numerous restarts throughout the second half of the race. However, he picked the worst possible time to have a mediocre restart, allowing Jamie McMurray to grab the lead with only a handful of laps remaining. Busch was unable to get back around McMurray, and McMurray picked up his second career win at Charlotte.

Earlier this year, Matt Kenseth appeared to be on his way to a win at Charlotte, but the race came down to which drivers could stretch their fuel the furthest. Dale Earnhardt Jr. seemed to have the race in hand on the final lap, but he ran out of fuel exiting Turn 4. Kevin Harvick took advantage and scooted by the coasting Junior to win the Coca-Cola 600.

The Favorites – 2011 Bank of America 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Playoff time has once again been Jimmie Johnson’s time to shine, and Charlotte has always been one of his best tracks. He finished third in the fall event at the track a year ago, and he has won six times during his career. Johnson has finished seventh or better in 13 of his 19 starts at the track, and it would be a major surprise if he isn’t a serious contender for the win Saturday night.

He has been excellent at 1.5-mile tracks all year, and Matt Kenseth should make some noise this weekend at Charlotte. After all, he has five straight top-15 finishes at the track and is a former winner. More importantly, he led the most laps at the track earlier this year and had the car to beat before fuel mileage strategy jumbled the running order.

It is now or never for Kyle Busch’s title hopes, but Charlotte could be the track where he gets some momentum going. He has finished eighth or better in seven of his last nine starts at the track, including a second-place finish last fall after leading the most laps. Busch has never won at Charlotte, but he has finished fourth or better five times.

The Dark Horses – 2011 Bank of America 500 Lines, Preview and Expert Picks

There aren’t many tracks on the schedule where David Reutimann has been consistent, but Charlotte is one of them. He has five straight top-15 finishes at the track, including three straight top-10 finishes. Reutimann has won at Charlotte in the past, and his five top-10 finishes at are the most at any track on the schedule for Reutimann.

It has been a forgettable 2011 season for Joey Logano, but Charlotte has remained a bright spot. He finished a career-best third at the track earlier this season, giving him five top-15 finishes in five career starts at Charlotte. Logano has finished in the top 10 in four of his five starts, and he just seems to keep getting better whenever he visits Charlotte.

Sleepers Specials – 2011 Bank of America 500 Vegas Odds, Expert Predictions and Free Picks

David Ragan finished 10th at Charlotte last fall, and earlier this season, he finished a career-best second. Ragan has been solid at the 1.5-mile tracks throughout the year, and Charlotte may be his best. He nearly pulled the upset in May, and he could seal the deal this weekend.

Driving for a single-car operation hasn’t slowed down Regan Smith. He has three straight top-20 finishes at the track and has improved in three consecutive starts. Smith finished 13th last fall and notched a career-best eighth-place finish at Charlotte in May. He shocked everyone with his win at Darlington this year, and he may have another upset in him Saturday night.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 Bank of America 500 Betting Odds, Predictions and Free NASCAR Picks

He has cooled off since his hot start to the playoffs, and Tony Stewart’s slide could continue this weekend. He has finished outside the top 10 in his last seven starts at Charlotte, and he hasn’t had a top-five finish since a victory in 2003. Stewart has finished outside the top 15 in his last two starts at Charlotte, and he will need to make a bug turnaround to become a factor this weekend.

Jeff Burton is a former winner at Charlotte, but he hasn’t had a top-10 finish in five starts since his last trip to Victory Lane. He has finished 20th or worse four times during the stretch, and Burton has done next to nothing for most of the 2011 season.
