Week 1 College Football Free Picks, News, and Notes

Here we go!!!!!!!!!!! Live football action that counts. College Football couldn’t come sooner. Each weekend I will give you point spread picks, pro and college. Remember, I am not a professional hanicapper and NSAwins.com has nothing to do with these picks. I am simply a writer for the NSAwins.com “FINAL SCORE REPORT” Blog. Having said that, here are my picks for saturday’s College Football(9/5/09):

WEST MICH + 13 – Michigan is starting a freshman QB in an offense that requires all complicated reads. Offensive line still hasn’t learned their reads. Michigan fans aren’t too keen on new coach yet. West Michigan is not a bad team so I’m taking the points.

UCONN – 3.5 – Uconn has new QB and will throw the ball with a more balanced attack. Defense should be solid. What better team to build confidence with than Ohio. They don’t crack the top 100 in power rankings. Uconn coach will not allow his team to take them lightly, plus, it is the season opener. Lay the small number.

PURDUE – 10.5 – Toledo is going threw massive changes this year. I think they will struggle all year. Purdue is not great, but they aren’t changing much and are more athletic and physical than Toledo. Opening up at home. Give the points.

BUFFALO + 8.5 – Buffalo always improving under Turner Gill. He got snubbed for some higher profile jobs last year. I think UTEP will pay for that. UTEP is certainly no team to be scared of. Both teams score but lack a defense. Too many points for a Buffalo team who i think is better. Take, take, take.

CENT MICH + 14 – Arizona is on the 20 yr Stoops plan. Every year, people wait for them to raise to a championship level. Keep waiting. They will have a physical advantage, but if you have ever seen Cent Mich play, they turn the game into a tempo game that is upbeat and relies on great play calling. Offense is incredible, defense is a liablity. But they are playing Arizona. +14 way too many.

Good luck with my picks. Let’s look at College Football in a nutshell….

Can Charlie Weis step up to the plate?
The human excuse machine is running out of time. My gut feeling is no. I think we see New England’s offense hasn’t suffered since he left. I think he’s in over his head.

Is Florida beatable?
Urban Meyer is unbeatable without Tebow, much less with him. I’m sick of Tebow’s personal life being thrown in my face, but that won’t matter on the field. Can LSU, ALABAMA or anyone step up and challenge these guys?

I must have missed the Ole Miss bandwagon.
Already in top 10? Ok, they have talent, but maybe they could win some games against the elite teams before we make them top 10 material.

Can Pete Carroll get USC to Florida’s status?
They were there before Urban showed up. Freshmen QB, but that isn’t a dealbreaker. Defense needs to step up. Right now it’s Urban, Carroll, and Saban. And dead last, Bob Oops…err…Stoops.

Can anyone undo what Greg Robinson did to Syracuse?
I’ve never seen a worse football coach in my life. He was a horrible defensive cooridinator in the NFL. He fooled everyone with his 2 rings. He got them because Shanahan owned the time of possession with his running game and his below average defense was never on the field. Elway didn’t hurt either. We saw his true skill when he went to KC and gave up 31 pts a game and then got run out of town on a rail. Maybe Jimmy B. has to go over to the football field and make people understand.

Here’s some things College Football needs to change:
THE BCS – I can’t even write about this criminal crime organization without foaming at the mouth.

Cupcake Opponents – How can anyone be a 40 pt favorite. It’s a disgrace to the game of football. It’s the worship of money, like THE BCS.

2 Feet in Bounds on Catch.
How in the world can you be considered in bounds when one foot lands out of bounds? That is insane. But that’s the NCAA.

You must be tackled to be considered down.
What is this, pee-wee? Football is a contact game. If you fall and get up before you are touched, that’s called football. By their own rule, the holder on PAT’S and FG’S is down when they catch the snap. Of course, they had to institute a rule exempting them from the normal rule. WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!!! That should tell you how flawed that whole rule is.

Pass Interference.
It should be a spot foul. Now a defensive back who knows he’s cooked for a 70 yard can just tackle the receiver just before he catches it. And he only gets 15 yd penalty. Who thinks of this stuff??

Finally, this goes for pro and college players.
How many players have to fumble the ball through the endzone trying to stretch the ball over the goal line. Unless it’s 4th down, don’ t take that chance. In some cases, it can be tried, but now when someone gets within the 5 yd line, they carry the ball like a loaf of bread. The smart runners know when to stretch, but they have inspired the idiot runners to try the impossible. RISK VS. REWARD.
