2019 College Football Heisman Trophy Power Rankings – Heading into Week 5

1. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma Sooners

Three games into his career with the Sooners, Hurts has thrown for 880 yards and nine touchdowns and rushed for 373 yards and four scores. He is also completing 80.3 percent of his passes, averaging 14.4 yards per pass attempt. His numbers already jump off the page, and looking at the schedule, Texas looks to be the only team that will have a chance to slow down Hurts and the Oklahoma offense. If he lights up the Longhorns in a few weeks, he is going to be tough to dethrone as the Heisman favorite.

2. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide

The Crimson Tide have been demolishing opponents, and after four games, Tagovailoa has thrown for 1,300 and 17 touchdowns with no interceptions. He is completing a ridiculous 77.7 percent of his passes, averaging 11.6 yards per pass attempts. Last year’s Heisman runner-up has accounted for at least four touchdowns in every game this year, and with Texas A&M, LSU and Auburn still on the schedule, he will have several chances to make statements on big stages to push him to the top of the list of Heisman voters.

3. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU Tigers

LSU’s coaching staff sure wasn’t kidding when they said they would open up the offense this year, and Burrow is thriving. Through four games, he has thrown 1,520 yards and 17 touchdowns, completing 80.6 percent of his passes. He has already outdueled Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger in a battle of Top 10 teams, completing 31 of his 39 passes for 471 yards and four scores in a 45-38 victory, and with matchups against Florida, Auburn and Alabama still to come, he will have plenty of opportunities to win over voters. If Burrow leads the Tigers to an SEC title, there’s a good chance he is also holding the Heisman.

4. Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin Badgers

Facing his toughest opponent of the year, Taylor shredded the Michigan Wolverines to the tune of 203 rushing yards on 8.8 yards per carry and two scores. He is the centerpiece of a Wisconsin team that still looks to be a major player in the Big Ten, and by the end of the year, he could be sitting inside the top five in career rushing yards. A four-game stretch in the middle of the year that features games against Michigan State, Ohio State and Iowa will likely decide whether the Badgers play for a conference title and whether Taylor has a legitimate shot to win the Heisman.

5. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State Buckeyes

In his first year under center for the Buckeyes, Fields has surpassed every reasonable expectation. He has thrown for 13 touchdowns and run for six scores, throwing multiple touchdowns and running for at least one touchdown in all four games. He set a school record in Week 4 when he accounted for six total touchdowns in a single quarter, and he has the Ohio State offense looking as dangerous as ever. With four opponents still on the schedule currently ranked in the Top 25, Fields could make a strong push as the year goes on if he continues to pile up huge numbers.
