2011 Ole Miss Rebels College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Ole Miss NCAA Football Preview: The 2010-11 season was a wake-up call for the Ole Miss Rebels. After earning trips to the Cotton Bowl in the two previous years, the Rebels struggled to a 4-8 record last season, becoming one of the bottom feeders of the SEC West. Ole Miss head coach Houston Nutt is convinced that he can spearhead a quick turnaround by bringing some toughness back to the program, but Nutt and the Rebels may find out in 2011-12 that it takes much more than a winning attitude to actually win in the SEC.

Nutt’s top priority has to be finding a starting quarterback. The battle will likely come down to dual-threat Randall Mackey and Zack Stoudt – a more traditional pocket passer. Stoudt fits the mold of QBs that Nutt has had success with in the past, but for a program that isn’t exactly oozing with talent at the skill positions, Mackey’s ability to make plays with his legs could come in handy. As it stands, both players will likely see time under center until a clear-cut leader emerges. The bad news for whoever is running the show is that the Rebels don’t have a lot of weapons capable of stretching the field.

With two top-notch starters back on the offensive line, the strength of this year’s team needs to be the running game if the Rebels are going to succeed. Brandon Bolden should lead the ground attack, coming off a season when he nearly topped 1,000 yards. The senior is an every-down back that is adept at catching passes out of the backfield, and he and fellow senior rusher Enrique Davis form a nice duo. Davis is more of a goal line back, but he is also capable of giving Bolden a breather.

On defense, an already suspect unit will be missing its best player. Linebacker and defensive leader D.T. Shackelford tore his ACL during spring practices. The rest of the Ole Miss defense is relatively young and inexperienced, but given the team’s struggles on that side of the ball last season, a fresh start may be a good thing. In the end, this year’s Rebels figure to have more speed and athleticism than the previous group, but developing chemistry as a unit won’t be easy in a conference like the SEC.

Life in the SEC West isn’t easy, and the Rebels face an absolutely brutal schedule this season. The season opens with a tough out-of-conference matchup against BYU, and aside from a road against Vanderbilt, out-of-conference games against Fresno State and Louisiana Tech may be the only winnable games for Ole Miss. The Rebels go on the road to face Mississippi State, Kentucky and Auburn, and they welcome Alabama, LSU, Arkansas and Georgia to Vaught Hemingway Stadium. In short, it is going to be a long year in the SEC.

Given the question marks at quarterback and at wide receiver, the Ole Miss offense is likely going to struggle putting up points. Without its best defensive player, the defense will be mediocre at best as well. In a conference as tough as the SEC, teams can go from contenders to afterthoughts overnight. Ole Miss is learning that lesson the hard way, and the Rebels will likely miss out on the bowl season for the second year in a row.
