2013 GEICO 400 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-Geico-400-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 GEICO 400 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs: The Chase for the Sprint Cup begins this weekend at Chicagoland Speedway, and while history says that there won’t be many upset winners during the playoffs, some serious dark horses have been among the exceptions. With that in mind, looking for underdogs to win this weekend at Chicagoland and beyond gets a bit trickier. Given the rarity of upsets in the Chase, bettors that do want to go out on a limb should probably just try to hit it really big. With that in mind, this week’s list of potential underdogs includes some serious longshots.

Although his starts at Chicagoland have been sporadic and have come for a variety of teams, Brian Vickers has always been solid at the 1.5-mile oval. In fact, his 9.5 average finish at the track is the second best among drivers in the field this weekend. Vickers has finished in the top 15 in all six of his starts at Chicagoland, and he has finished seventh or better three times. Despite being one of the most consistent drivers at the track, he is a 40/1 longshot to win this weekend. Bettors should definitely consider taking advantage.

After a rocky start as Tony Stewart’s replacement, Mark Martin appeared to find his footing last weekend at Richmond when he notched a top-10 finish. Now, the veteran heads to a Chicagoland track where he has always run well. In 12 starts at the track, he has nine top-15 finishes, including four straight. More importantly, Martin picked up a win at Chicagoland in 2009. Throw in the fact that he will be driving for a Stewart-Haas Racing team that has never finished outside the top 10 at the track, and Martin could be a steal at his current 50/1 odds.

Bobby Labonte’s rib injury will keep him sidelined another week so bettors will have at least one more chance to take advantage of A.J. Allmendinger. He is a 150/1 longshot to win this weekend at Chicagoland, but he has actually been solid at the track throughout his career, logging three top-15 finishes in four starts. Meanwhile, he has three straight top-15 finishes in the JTG Daugherty Racing No. 47, including a 14th-place run at an Atlanta track that shares the same 1.5-mile layout as Chicagoland. Given his long odds, it will only take a small bet to lead to a huge payout.

Bettors looking for a serious longshot this weekend may want to consider Justin Allgaier. After a couple of solid seasons in the Nationwide Series, he will make his Cup Series debut this weekend. While there is no way to tell how a young driver will fare in his Cup debut, Allgaier couldn’t have picked a better track. In six Nationwide starts at Chicagoland, he compiled an 8.1 average finish and has a win. Allgaier is basically a complete unknown, but at his 500/1 odds and a history of success at Chicagoland, bettors could catch lightning in a bottle and earn a massive payout for a very minimal investment.
