2013 GEICO 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Johnson and Kenseth the Vegas Favorites

2013-Geico-400-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 GEICO 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Johnson and Kenseth the Vegas Favorites: The Cup Series heads to Chicagoland Speedway this weekend for the start of the 2013 Chase for the Sprint Cup. The 1.5-mile oval has hosted the first race of the playoffs in each of the past two seasons, and both years, the winner of the race went on to win the championship. In fact, last year’s race turned out to be an excellent predictor of what was to come. Jimmie Johnson led a race-high 172 of the 267 laps, but Brad Keselowski would eventually emerge with the win. The two would then spend the next 10 races battling it out for the title with Keselowski again coming out on top.

The Favorites

Although he has never won at Chicagoland, Jimmie Johnson has been among the most consistent performers at the track. In fact, his 9.3 average finish is the best among drivers in the field this weekend. Overall, Johnson has nine top-10s in 12 starts at Chicagoland, including six finishes of fourth or better. Last year, Johnson led the most laps before settling for a second-place finish, and seems like only a matter of time before he finally seals the deal.

He has had the best car at Chicagoland on several occasions, but a couple of second-place finishes are the best Matt Kenseth has to show for his efforts up to this point. However, three of his series-leading five wins this season have come at tracks with the same 1.5-mile layout as Chicagoland. In fact, Kenseth has won half of the races at 1.5-mile ovals this year, and there is no reason he shouldn’t be in the mix for another win this weekend.

The Dark Horses

His nickname is “The Closer” for a reason, and Kevin Harvick has a way of quietly being in contention at Chicagoland late in races. He has a 10.5 average finish in 12 starts at the track, and he has finished fourth or better six times. More importantly, Harvick already has two wins under his belt at Chicagoland, and he finished second in the 2011 race. Expect him to be near the front when the laps wind down Sunday.

While his two most-recent starts at Chicagoland haven’t been great, Jeff Gordon has delivered his share of elite finishes at the track. In 12 starts, he has finished fourth or better six times, winning at the 2006 event and finishing second on two other occasions. Don’t be surprised when he shows up with a car capable of winning Sunday.

Although he is still looking for a breakout performance at Chicagoland, Clint Bowyer is no stranger to running near the front at the track. His 10.1 average finish is the third best among drivers in the field this weekend, and in seven starts he has six top-10s, including four straight. Bowyer always seems to have a good car at Chicagoland, and this could be the weekend he takes the next step.

Sleeper Special

Despite bouncing between several teams in recent years, Brian Vickers has managed to compile one of the most impressive records at Chicagoland. In fact, his 9.5 average finish at the track is the second best of any driver racing this weekend. Vickers has made six starts at Chicagoland overall, and he has never finished outside the top 15. More importantly, he has finished seventh or better three times.

Big Name to Avoid

He has actually been one of the better drivers in the series at 1.5-mile tracks throughout his career, but Greg Biffle just can’t seem to figure out Chicagoland. In 10 starts at the track, he has compiled a lackluster 18.2 average finish. Worse yet, he has only managed a single top-10 finish at the track.
