UFC Live 6 – Lightweight Bout

Matt “Handsome” Wiman vs. Mac Danzig

Matt “Handsome” Wiman (13-6) has been in the UFC since 2006 and has put together a record of 7-4. Wiman found recent success stringing together three wins in a row before his most recent bout with Dennis Siver which he lost by unanimous decision. He has shown the ability to adapt in fights and can win with his hands or jiu-jitsu. Wiman has finished four bouts by (T)KO, four by way of submission and five by decision. He also has taken home three Fight of the Night honors.

The Ultimate Fighter 6 winner Mac Danzig (20-8-1) is looking to put some consistency together in his career. After winning The Ultimate Fighter 6 Danzig has since gone 3-4 and was submitted in two of the losses. His most recent bout was a victory over Joe Stevenson in dramatic fashion. Just 1:54 into the first round Danzig landed a punch that ended Stevenson’s night that earned him Knockout of the Night.
This is a rematch of a bout that took place in June of 2010. The fight ended in controversy when Wiman sunk in a guillotine choke and the referee stepped in to stop the fight without Danzig tapping and still being conscious. That fight will have left a huge chip on the shoulder of Danzig (N/A) who is looking to correct what he sees as a grievous error. Both of these fighters have well rounded skills but it’s Wiman (N/A) who will have the advantage when this fight gets in tight. It will be a back and forth exchange on the feet but Wiman’s grappling will give him the extra points he will need to win.

Prediction – Matt “Handsome” Wiman by way of unanimous decision

UFC Live 6 – Welterweight Bout

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson vs. Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman

Anthony “Rumble” Johnson (9-3) spent all of 2010 sidelined due to a knee injury that he suffered during training. His most recent bout was a unanimous decision victory over slugger Dan Hardy. Before that his last fight was November of 2009. Johnson earned Fight of the Night honors in a submission loss to Josh Koscheck. He has a wrestler’s background but is constantly working to evolve his game standing up. His wrestling can control the pace of the fight and has knockout power in his hands and feet.

Charlie “The Spaniard” Brenneman (14-2) is coming off by far the biggest win of his MMA career. Brenneman filled in for Nate Marquardt who was pulled from the fight due to not receiving medical clearance to fight Rick Story. Using his wrestling and cardio to keep out of danger on the feet Brenneman was able to control Story on his way to a three round unanimous decision victory.

UFC Betting

Brenneman (N/A) is coming into this fight with a tremendous amount of momentum. He was able to control a highly favored opponent and avoid submissions on the ground but in this fight Johnson (N/A) is going to be much more difficult to handle. Johnson is a very big welterweight and has the wrestling pedigree to neutralize Brenneman’s attack. The biggest difference maker in this fight will be Johnson’s standup. He will pepper in shots that will frustrate Brenneman enough to disrupt his takedown attempts. Once Brenneman isn’t able to take Johnson to the mat he’ll capitalize with his superior striking.

Prediction – Anthony “Rumble” Johnson by way of TKO

UFC Live 6- Heavyweight Bout

Pat “HD” Barry vs. Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve

Pat “HD” Barry (6-3) has struggled with consistency since entering the UFC going 3-3 in his six fights. In his most recent fight he had Cheick Kongo in serious trouble in the first round. Multiple times Barry dropped Kongo and each time Barry tried to storm in to finish. Barry got a little over zealous thinking Kongo was out on his feet when Kongo landed a punch that put him out cold. Before the moment he was knocked out Barry was controlling the fight on the feet with his heavy hands. Barry is short for a heavyweight but he still enjoys getting into the pocket and trading punches.

At a height of 6’11” Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve (21-5) has a natural advantage over everyone he fights. His height gives him the reach advantage over almost everyone and his long limbs allow him to more easily maneuver for submissions. In his last bout against Travis Browne his height and reach advantages were neutralized. Browne leaned in and landed a clean superman punch that put Struve on his back. Browne was able to capitalize and win the fight by TKO.

This fight is going to be decided on whether or not Barry (N/A) can get far enough into the pocket to land effective strikes. The reach advantage should be massive for Struve (N/A) so if he can get a jab working he can control the distance. Struve also has another advantage in this fight, his ground game. Fourteen times Struve has won by submission and he can use this to avoid the heavy hands of Barry if he gets into trouble. Look for Struve to control where the fight takes place with his strikes and swarm when he has Barry hurt.

Prediction – Stefan “Skyscraper” Struve by way of submission

UFC Live 6 – Bantamweight Championship Bout

Dominick Cruz (Champion) vs. Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (Challenger)

Dominick Cruz (18-1) has won nine fights in a row and has been bantamweight champion since March of 2010. Cruz utilizes a very unorthodox method of striking that confuses his opponents. Always in motion and weaving in and out of the pocket makes Cruz’s style one of the most difficult to figure out. His lone loss came in his WEC debut against Urijah Faber. The then WEC featherweight champion was able to catch Cruz in a guillotine just 1:38 into the first round. In his most recent title defense Cruz was able to avenge that loss. After five hard fought rounds the judges awarded a unanimous decision in favor of Cruz.

Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson (10-1) is a powerful wrestler that uses his strength to grind down opponents. To go along with his power in the takedowns Johnson also has a very nice submission game. Five times he’s finished fights with submissions four times with chokes and one by armbar. His only loss came by a unanimous decision loss where he was the one dominated by takedowns by Brad Pickett. Since that loss Johnson has won four in a row only finishing one of those fights.

The biggest question in this fight is if Johnson (+350) can bring it to the mat. Johnson’s striking has looked serviceable in his bouts but Cruz (-440) has hands that are on a different level than the rest of the weight class. Cruz has been able to stifle the wrestling of top tier guys before so Johnson may be in for a long night. Cruz will stick and move like he always does and not allow Johnson to settle into any kind of rhythm. Bettors can count on Cruz neutralizing the wrestling and effectively pick apart Johnson on the feet.

Prediction – Dominick Cruz by way of unanimous decision
