2010 US Open Men’s Odds, Preview, and Predictions: Nadal, Federer Seeded 1-2

2010 US Open Men’s Odds, Preview, and Predictions: Nadal, Federer Seeded 1-2 – Since 2004 only four men’s players not named Nadal or Federer have won a grand slam title. 2004 French Open Gaston Gaudio, 2005 Australian Open Marat Safin, 2008 Australian Open Novak Djokovic, and last year 2009 U.S. Open Juan Martin del Potro who has been injured since the Australian Open this spring and has withdrawn rather than defend his title. “I feel extremely sad to announce that I will not to be able to defend my US Open title,” said the 21-year-old del Potro. “Winning in New York last year has been my major accomplishment in tennis and my best memory so far. I am so sorry for my fans, my sponsors and all the people that care about me, but I have only started practicing in the last two weeks and unfortunately I cannot compete at the top level yet. I look forward to returning to New York in 2011 and wish all the best to the tournament organizers and my fellow players.”

The other twenty-three grand slams titles during the last 6 years all belong to number 1 ranked Rafael Nadal or number 2 ranked Roger Federer and this year looks to be no different. Rafael Nadal the top seed for the second time in three years won the French Open and Wimbledon this year, but he has never made it past the semifinals. A victory would complete the career grand slam. Vegas odds makers have Rafael Nadal 11/4 odds to win the 2010 US Open.

Del Potro defeated Federer in last year’s final, ending his string of five straight U.S. Open titles in a 5 set epic final. Federer, who won the Australian Open this year, is seeking his record 17th Grand Slam tournament title. Federer is coming off a win against American Mardy Fish 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-4 on Sunday, winning his second straight Cincinnati Masters championship and fourth overall. Vegas odds makers have Roger Federer 9/4 odds to win the 2010 US Open.

Seeded third  through eigth are:

No. 3 Novak Djokovic

No. 4  Andy Murray

No. 5. Robin Soderling

No. 6 Nikolay Davydenko

No. 7 Tomas Berdych

No. 8 Fernando Verdasco

Vegas odds makers at SBG Global Novak Djokovic 14/1 and Andy Murray 7/2 odds to win the 2010 US Open.

No. 9 is American Andy Roddick who had a good showing making the semifinals in the Cincinnati Masters propelling himself back into the top 10 last week.  Vegas odds makers at SBG Global have Andy Roddick 20/1 odds to win the 2010 US Open.

Tennis can be a fickle game but history is hard to ignore. I predict another Federer title to extend his record to 17 Grand Slams. Nadal is having a good year, but got bounced in the warm up in Cincinnati and this doesn’t appear to be his surface.
