Week 1 NFL Picks, News & Notes

Well people, the NFL season is FINALLY through with the fake games and ready to rock and roll this Thursday night.  Each week I’ll pick my 5 best Sunday games as well as the Thursday & Monday primetime games.  I’m not a professional handicapper or affiliated with the NSAWins stable of pro’s, I’m just a blogger, but I’ve been known to get hot once in a while…  So, let’s get on with it…

Thursday 9/10

Pittsburgh Minus 6  – The Steelers have been waiting to smack the Titans since last year when they stomped on their terrible towels, should be a good game but Steelers pull away late.

Pittsburgh/Tennessee Over 35 – Even though they both have good defenses, they also had time to prepare and I see some fireworks.

Sunday 9/13

Miami Plus 4 – I see this as one of those back and forth games decided by a FG.  In this case, give me the points.

Philadelphia Minus 1.5- Carolina is pretty bad on defense and if Philly can limit the run game of Carolina, they should win this one.

Baltimore Minus 13 – Ravens and KC are at different ends of the spectrum, don’t see KC scoring at all and Flacco has looked great in preseason.

New York Giants Minus 6.5–  The G-Men look to return to their physical dominating style from early last year against a suspect Redskins squad.

Green Bay Minus 3.5 – The Packers send a message to the division early that they’re ready to contend for the division.

Monday 9/14

New England Minus 10.5 – Brady & the offense will put up the points, but can TO make a difference on Buffalo’s bad offense and how will NE’s re-tooled defense fare?   Here’s betting Brady makes it a moot point.

San Diego Minus 9 – This year is put up or shut up time for LT, Antonio Gates & company as they have never had a better opportunity given their weak-ass division.  They need to come out of the gate quickly this year.

News & Notes:

Seymour Trade- Forget the local sportswriter whining in Boston, this was a brilliant move by the Hoodie.  Seymour was in the final year of his contract and was most likely not re-signing with NE, plus NE wasn’t going to pay him big bucks when they need to pay Wilfork.  So, instead of getting a compensatory 3rd rd. pick after losing him at the end of the year, they got a 1st rounder that will most likely be a top ten pick.  Some say Seymour was prone to dogging it and loafing on the field; I don’t know about that, but it was clear he wasn’t playing at a probowl level the past few years and wasn’t elite anymore.  Is it going to improve NE’s defense this year?  No, but it probably isn’t going to hurt them since Jarvis Green has played well in place of Seymour in the past.  You gotta ask yourself what in the hell was Oakland thinking?  Giving up a 1st rounder for basically renting a player for one year, not good.  Much like Uncle Junior on the Soprano’s, Uncle Al has officially lost his marbles….

Offensive Coordinator Firings– Is it any wonder some teams never win?  KC, Tampa Bay and now Buffalo fire their OC’s right on the cusp of the season.  Most of these guys had a body of work to evaluate, so why did you hire them in the first place?  The guy let go in Buffalo fired back and said it was because he didn’t make the offense simple enough so Jauron could understand it… Beautiful.   I thought Jauron was overrated and in over his head before this gem.  Am I wrong Buffalo fans?
