2017 NFL Power Rankings – Top 10 Head Coaches in the NFL, Belichick & Everyone Else

The Cream of the Crop

1. Bill Belichick(Head Coach of the New England Patriots) What else is there to say about Belichick? The guy is hands down the best in the NFL and one of, if not the BEST head coach in NFL history. His resume is as good as it gets. Belichick has a lifetime record of 237-115 including 201-71 as head coach of the Patriots. He now owns 5 Lombardi Trophies as a head coach and that is the best of all time. His detractors may point to the “Spy-gate” and “Deflate-gate” scandals as reasons why he is overrated or the fact that he’s had the luxury of coaching Tom Brady for 15 plus years now. However, ask yourself, who makes better in-game adjustments or gets his team prepared better than Belichick? Nobody, that’s who. The guy almost never gets outcoached and makes some of the NFL’s best coaches(aka Mike Tomlin) look like clowns when they match up. You can hate the guy all you want but you have to respect him. The gold standard in the NFL head coaching world.

2. Pete Carroll(Head Coach of the Seattle Seahawks) Pete Carroll has done a fabulous job in his 7 seasons as the Seahawks head coach. His career record as a head coach is 103-72-1 but he is 70-41-1 as the head coach for the Seahawks. Carroll has had his team win double figures in each of the last five seasons and has won one Super Bowl and came within a yard of winning back-to-back Super Bowls. Carroll is the classic “players coach” and that has played really well so far in his Seattle tenure with the roster they have built. Time will tell if it lasts as there has been rumblings of a rift between the offense and defense the past year or so but, for now, it looks like Seattle is on their way to another double digit win season and playoff run.

3. Mike Tomlin(Head Coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers) Patriots fans may scoff at Tomlin being ranked this high but he deserves to be when you look at his competition for this spot. Tomlin’s image has been tarnished by repeated ass whippings against New England, but he is 103-57 overall in his career after 10 seasons as the Steelers man in charge. Tomlin has one Lombardi Trophy and two Super Bowl appearances so far in his career and that is better than most. Tomlin, like Carroll, is a classic “players coach” who does a good job of keeping his team motivated and ready to play each and every week in a tough, physical division. The Steelers have won double digit games the past three seasons and have made the playoffs three years in a row.

The Best of the Rest

4. Mike McCarthy(Head Coach of the Green Bay Packers) 114-61-1 career record. Some say he should have more than 1 Super Bowl ring with Aaron Rodgers as his qb, but he’s made the playoffs the last 8 seasons and always has the Packers in the Super Bowl conversation.

5. Sean Payton(Head Coach of the New Orleans Saints) 94-66 career record. One of the best offensive minds in football with 1 Super Bowl ring as a head coach.

6. John Harbaugh(Head Coach of the Baltimore Ravens) 85-59 career record. Another “players coach” who has one Super Bowl ring and owns a 2-2 career playoff record against Belichick.

7. Dan Quinn(Head Coach of the Atlanta Falcons) 19-13 career record. Made the Super Bowl in just his 2nd season as head coach of the Falcons and should have won it. However, he has the talent to get back soon and add a ring to his finger.

8. Andy Reid(Head Coach of the Kansas City Chiefs) 173-114-1 career record. The guy has made a lot of playoff appearances and made one Super Bowl without ever having a truly elite passing quarterback. That’s hard to do in the NFL.

9. Ron Rivera(Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers) 53-42-1 career record. Rivera is a no nonsense coach who has his team prepared to play each week. A solid head coach without question.

10. Adam Gase(Head Coach of the Miami Dolphins)
10-6 career record. We are bullish on this guy. He has all the makings of a future great NFL head coach in our opinion. He is an awesome offensive mastermind and appears to be a serious head coach that won’t allow the inmates to run the asylum.
