2015 NFL Picks & Predictions – Baltimore Ravens @ Denver Broncos Odds & Free Picks

The Denver Broncos come into Sunday’s opening game with a new head coach this season as Gary Kubiak takes over for John Fox. Kubiak is known for relying on a balanced attack that focuses more on running the ball than what Denver fans and quarterback Peyton Manning was used to over the past few years playing for Fox. The good news in that shift in philosophy for Manning and company is that he may be more rested towards the end of the year and his ageing arm may have more gas left in the tank since it’s doubtful he’ll be asked to throw the ball for an average of 600 times over the course of the season like he has in his first three seasons playing for Denver.

The Broncos will certainly find a way to put up points as long as Manning is healthy this season but the defense is what Denver fans should be excited about. Denver’s defense was 3rd overall in the NFL last season in total defense including 1st in the AFC. Lost in the headlines regarding Manning’s health last season when they were ousted at home against Indianapolis in the AFC Divisional Round was the fact Denver’s defense did hold Andrew Luck and the high flying Colts offense to a respectable 24 points in their 24-13 loss. If the defense can come close to matching last season’s performance and the offense becomes more balanced then Denver has a real shot at being a Super Bowl contender this season in the AFC.

Head coach John Harbaugh is one of the NFL’s top coaches if not one of the league’s biggest whiners. He wins a lot of games and seems to have the Ravens in the mix in the postseason every year but he also loves to whine and cry when he loses big games. The Ravens were ousted in the AFC Divisional Round last January to New England after they blew two 14 point leads on the road in Foxboro. Instead of taking his medicine and loss like a man and admitting he was outcoached, Harbaugh had to cry to the media and act like New England was running illegal formations.

Despite Harbaugh’s tiresome act it’s hard to not like Baltimore’s chances this season. The offense will be solid once again with steady Joe Flacco at quarterback and gritty veteran wide receiver Steve Smith headlining the unit. Defensively, the Ravens will be one of the top overall units in the NFL and should improve on last season’s 8th overall unit as they welcome back pro bowl cornerback Jimmy Smith back from a season ending injury last year and veteran cornerback Lardarius Webb should be healthier on the other side of the field as he battled a back injury for most of the season last year. Look for Baltimore’s secondary to be vastly improved and that should help them big time when they go up against the league’s best passing attacks including New England’s.

Who do we like on Sunday in the Ravens vs Broncos showdown? Well, we look for this to be a competitive close game. The fact that Kubiak is the head coach now in Denver should scare bettors because he likes to play very conservatively when he has a lead and that will be a change from Fox who allowed Manning and the offense to keep slinging away in the 2nd half of games that they were in firm control over. We will take the points on Sunday with Baltimore getting +5 as not only do we feel they are the better team overall but we also feel they have a strong opportunity for an outright win.
