2014 NFL Mock Draft: Projected Top 10 Picks

2014 NFL Mock Draft: Projected Top 10 Picks: With the 2014 NFL Draft officially less than a month away, players are wrapping up their private workouts while teams are conducting interviews with various prospects. Every draft is filled with unknowns, but this year’s draft seems to have even more question marks than normal. The Houston Texans have made few hints about their plans for the top pick, and the same can be said for just about every team picking behind them. However, team needs to point to certain selections, and with that in mind, here is how I see the top-10 picks in the 2014 NFL Draft shaking out as of now.

1.      Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End, South Carolina Gamecocks

The Texans need a QB, but there isn’t a guaranteed star at the position in this draft. Granted, Clowney isn’t a risk-free choice, but there is little doubt that he is the most-physically gifted player in this year’s class. Houston takes the best-available player on the board, teaming Clowney with J.J. Watt to form a scary pass-rushing tandem.

2.      Buffalo Bills (Via Trade): Sammy Watkins, Wide Receiver, Clemson Tigers

Coach Doug Marrone has hitched his wagon to E.J. Manuel, but if the second-year QB is going to succeed, he needs a legit No. 1 target to throw to. Watkins is the best receiver in this draft and probably one of the top-three prospects overall. In the first big surprise of the draft, Buffalo trades up to add the most-explosive offensive weapon in the draft.

3.      Jacksonville Jaguars: Khalil Mack, Outside Linebacker, Buffalo Bulls

Jacksonville needs to upgrade a lot of positions, including the QB spot, but while questions abound about the quarterback prospects, Mack’s combination of size, speed and athleticism make him a safe bet to become a ferocious pass-rusher. He will be too hard to pass up for a team that logged an NFL-low 31.0 sacks last season.

4.      Cleveland Browns: Blake Bortles, Quarterback, UCF Knights

The Browns need a quarterback, and with Bortles ceiling likely the highest of any of the top prospects, they scoop him up. Bortles has the prototypical frame and the arm strength to make all the throws, and while it might take a year for him to work out some kinks, Bortles, Josh Gordon and Jordan Cameron would form the groundwork for a solid offense.

5.      Oakland Raiders: Greg Robinson, Offensive Tackle, Auburn Tackles

After making some questionable decisions during free agency, Oakland chooses substance over flash and adds the offensive lineman with the most upside. The Raiders let their best offensive tackle walk in free agency, but adding the physical beast like Robinson more than plugs the hole.

6.      Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M Aggies

Atlanta’s playoff hopes depend on Matt Ryan and the offense returning to form, and keeping the franchise QB upright will certainly help the cause. Matthews is the most-polished offensive lineman in this draft, and he will start and play at a high level immediately.

7.      Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Evans, Wide Receiver, Texas A&M Aggies

By cutting ties with Mike Williams, Tampa Bay finds itself in the market for a receiver to play across from Vincent Jackson. Evans is a big physical play-maker at the position, and the Buccaneers will make their offense substantially-more complete by adding a reliable No. 2 target in the passing game.

8.      Minnesota Vikings: Johnny Manziel, Quarterback, Texas A&M Aggies

Everybody knows his upside and his potential pitfalls, but just imagine an offense with Adrian Peterson, Cordarrelle Patterson and Manziel. The Vikings jump on the chance to build an offense around three players that can score whenever they touch the ball.

9.      St. Louis Rams (Via Trade): Taylor Lewan, Offensive Tackle, Michigan Wolverines

The Rams grab Lewan  to fill a need along the offensive line, and not only do they address one of their biggest needs with a player that figures to be one of the safer picks in the draft, but they also add some additional picks by moving down to do so.

10.  Detroit Lions: Justin Gilbert, Cornerback, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Thanks to his raw speed and other physical tools, Gilbert is the top-rated corner in this draft, and the Lions need to upgrade their secondary if they want to compete in a division with Aaron Rodgers and Chicago’s dynamic receiver tandem.
