2014 NFL Mock Draft: Final Top 10 Projections

2014 NFL Mock Draft: Final Top 10 Projections: After an extra two weeks of wait time, the 2014 NFL Draft is finally upon us. Unlike recent years when the top overall pick was already working on a contract at this point in the process, there still seems to be plenty of mystery surrounding every pick in this year’s draft. With that in mind, here are my final projections for the top 10 picks in the 2014 NFL Draft.

1. Houston Texans: Jadeveon Clowney, Defensive End, South Carolina Gamecocks

Atlanta would love to get its hand on the top pick, but I don’t see the Texans being willing to trade all the way down to the No. 6 spot. With that in mind, Clowney seems like a lock to be Houston’s selection at this point. He is a rare physical specimen, and he and J.J. Watt could instantly become the best pass-rushing duo.

2. St. Louis Rams: Greg Robinson, Offensive Tackle, Auburn Tigers

This pick is very much up for grabs, but ultimately, I don’t see St. Louis moving out of this spot. Meanwhile, the Rams seem committed to quarterback Sam Bradford, and adding a physically-dominant tackle that can help bolster the ground game and keep Bradford upright makes a lot of sense.

3. Jacksonville Jaguars: Khalil Mack, Outside Linebacker, Buffalo Bulls

The Jaguars offense is a mess, but Mack is the best prospect available at this point, and he also happens to be a perfect fit for Gus Bradley’s defense. Mack’s combination of speed, strength and athleticism gives him a chance to be a defensive game-changer for a team that needs as many play-makers as it can get.

4. Cleveland Browns: Johnny Manziel, Quarterback, Texas A&M Aggies

Cleveland needs a quarterback as much as any team in the NFL, and while he has some flaws, Manziel also has the tools to be something special. From his fiery personality to his big arm and scrambling ability, the former Heisman winner has an enormous ceiling that the Browns could gamble upon in an attempt to become relevant.

5. Buffalo Bills (Via Trade): Sammy Watkins, Wide Receiver, Clemson Tigers

Reports have Oakland targeting Taylor Lewan, and with Watkins on the board, this pick will be easy to move. Meanwhile, Buffalo is desperate to give E.J. Manuel an elite target, and they can secure the best receiver prospect in the draft my moving up to snag the speedy Watkins.

6. Atlanta Falcons: Jake Matthews, Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M Aggies

He is one of the safest picks in this draft, and Atlanta needs to upgrade its offensive line anyway. The fact that he is polished as both a pass-blocker and run-blocker makes him a great fit for the pass-heavy attack of Matt Ryan and company.

7. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Mike Evans, Wide Receiver, Texas AM Aggies

By cutting Mike Williams loose, Tampa Bay has to find an NFL-ready receiving option to pair with Vincent Jackson to have any sort of a decent offense this year. With his size and physicality, Evans will be able to make big plays immediately.

8. Minnesota Vikings: Blake Bortles, Quarterback, UCF Knights

The Vikings need a quarterback, and Bortles’ physical tools give him a chance to be the best prototypical pocket-passer in this draft. Not to mention the fact that his ideal NFL frame and ability to extend plays in the pocket fit what Minnesota offensive coordinator Norv Turner usually looks for in a QB.

9. Oakland Raiders (Via Trade): Taylor Lewan, Offensive Tackle, Michigan Wolverines

Oakland slides down a few spots, adds some picks and still gets the offensive tackle it has been coveting. The Raiders need a dominant tackle to anchor their line, and Lewan has the size, strength and mean streak to do just that.

10. Detroit Lions: Justin Gilbert, Cornerback, Oklahoma State Cowboys

Detroit’s current secondary is average at best, and that won’t cut it in a division with Aaron Rodgers and a Chicago passing attack that ranked in the top five in the NFL last year. Gilbert’s performance at the combine cemented his status as the best corner in this draft, and he will provide an instant boost to Detroit’s pass defense.
