2013 NFL Playoff Picks and Predictions: Top Super Bowl XLVI Sleeper Teams

2013-Super-Bowl-Odds-Favorites-and-Predictions2013 Super Bowl XLVI Picks and Predictions: Top Super Bowl Sleeper Teams in the 2013 NFL Playoffs: The NFL playoffs are set to begin Saturday, and before the wild card round gets started, bettors have one last chance to gamble on some Super Bowl sleepers. While Denver, New England and San Francisco are the odds-on favorites and the safer picks, there isn’t a ton of money to be made by playing it safe. Anything can happen in the playoffs, and teams that have played on wild-card weekend have gone on to win the Super Bowl in five of the last seven years. With that in mind, why not take a shot on one or two sleeper teams getting long odds to hoist the Lombardi Trophy. After all, even a small bet can lead to a sizeable payoff when the odds are right. On that note, here are three teams that have what it takes to be this year’s surprise Super Bowl team.

2012 NFL Playoff Picks and Predictions: Top Super Bowl Sleeper Teams

1.      Cincinnati Bengals (45/1)

Sure, the Bengals are 0-5 in franchise history in road playoff games and would have to win three just to reach the Super Bowl,  but Cincinnati is criminally underrated at their current 45/1 odds. After all, this team went 7-1 in the second half of the year and has one of the hottest defenses in the league. Cincinnati allowed just 12.8 points per game in second half and didn’t allow a single opponent to top 20 points during the stretch. Throw in the fact that the Bengals had the second-most sacks in the NFL this year, and their unit is more than capable of disrupting the star-studded crop of QBs Cincinnati would have to face to come out of the AFC. If the defense stays hot and the sophomore connection of quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver A.J. Green are in sync, Cincinnati is going to be a legitimate player in the postseason.

2.      Washington Redskins (18/1)

People point to Seattle and San Francisco as Super Bowl contenders because both teams run the ball well on offense and stuff the run on defense. Well, the Redskins follow that same recipe for success. In fact, Washington owns the league’s top rushing attack and fifth-best rushing defense. The Redskins are also great at creating turnovers, and they actually finished the regular season with the second-best turnover differential. Assuming the knee of quarterback Robert Griffin III is closer to 100 percent than it was last weekend, the Redskins’ offense is going to go back to being the unit that finished fourth in scoring. Add it all up, and Washington has an explosive offense and opportunistic defense. This team has won seven games in a row for a reason, and there is no reason the Redskins’ hot streak has to come an end just because the playoffs are about to begin.

3.      Atlanta Falcons (7/1)

Of the four teams that earned first-round byes, the Falcons have the worst odds to win the Super Bowl. Granted, the recent playoff history of Atlanta’s current core doesn’t exactly invoke confidence, but just because Matt Ryan and company haven’t won in the postseason yet doesn’t mean they can’t start this season. After all, the offense reached another level this year when Ryan was given the keys so to speak as the falcons finished with the sixth-best passing attack and fifth-best scoring offense. Roddy White, Julio Jones and Tony Gonzalez comprise what is probably the best trio of receivers in the playoffs, and with Atlanta having home-field advantage throughout the NFC, Ryan will have the comfy conditions of a dome to throw the ball in. Throw in the fact that the Falcons also finished fifth in scoring defense, and there isn’t a glaring weakness for this team.
