2013 NFL Mock Draft: Who Will Kansas City Take with the No. 1 Pick?

2013 NFL Mock Draft: Who Will Kansas City Take with the No. 1 Pick?: The 2013 NFL Draft is just a few days away, and unlike recent years, the No. 1 overall pick is still in doubt. That being said, Kansas City general manager John Dorsey recently said that the Chiefs have narrowed their decision down to four players. Naturally, he kept those four players a secret, but there are a few options that would seem to make the most sense. In one of the most unpredictable drafts in recent memory, Kansas City’s decision is going to have a major impact on the outcome of the entire first round. With that in mind, here is a look at the four players that the Chiefs are most likely to draft with the top pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

1.      Eric Fisher, Offensive Tackle, Central Michigan

There have been rumors that the Miami Dolphins may be looking to work a deal for Kansas City’s franchise-tagged left tackle Brandon Albert, but even if the deal does go down, Fisher still makes a lot of sense. For one, he has a little more upside in terms of physical gifts, and while he may need some polish before shifting to left tackle, his run blocking ability is undeniable. Keep in mind that the Chiefs’ top offensive weapon is running back Jamaal Charles so adding a massive tackle like Fisher that can pave the way on the ground has its obvious benefits.

2.      Luke Joeckel, Offensive Tackle, Texas A&M

Joeckel is definitely the most consistent, polished player at the tackle position or any position for that matter in this draft, and there is nothing wrong with playing it safe with the top pick. His ability to step in at the left tackle spot as a rookie would make moving current tackle Brandon Albert less of an issue, which could land the Chiefs a few other picks with which to rebuild. On the flip side, Joeckel’s NFL-ready pass blocking ability may not be Kansas City’s top priority considering the organization has committed to quarterback Alex Smith at least in the short term. The Chiefs want Smith to be a game manager so it’s not like he will be throwing the ball 40 times a game.

3.      Shariff Floyd, Defensive Tackle, Florida

A year after averaging an NFL-low 13.2 points per game, addressing the offense with the top pick makes obvious sense. However, adding Alex Smith at QB in the offseason already addresses that problem to a degree. Meanwhile, the Chiefs also allowed the sixth-most rushing yards per game last year, and adding Floyd would help in that area. The former Gator has done nothing but wow scouts with his quick first step, overall athleticism and agility, and he is being regarded as a DT that opens holes, absorbs multiple blockers and makes plays in the backfield. Some have even compared his skill set to that of Warren Sapp.

4.      Dion Jordan, Defensive End/Outside Linebacker, Oregon

In addition to their issue stopping the run, the Chiefs also struggled to get pressure on opposing QBs, registering the fourth-fewest sacks in the NFL. Enter Jordan, who brings a combination of size and speed to the table that could allow him to become a devastating edge rusher. After all, we are talking about a 250-pound, 6-foot-6 player that scouts say moves like a wide receiver. In terms of upside, Jordan has as much as any player available in this draft. That being said, Kansas City already has two hybrid-type edge rushers in Tamba Hali and Justin Houston that logged 9.0 and 10.0 sacks last year, respectively. Given all the Chiefs’ needs, it could be tough to justify drafting a player at one of the few positions where they already have productive players.
