2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Cornerbacks

2012 NFL Season Predictions – Top 5 Cornerbacks in the NFL: Cornerback has always been one of the toughest positions to play in football. The sheer fact that corners are forced to read and react to receivers and quarterbacks puts them at a disadvantage to begin with, and new rules that limit the contact that can be made has made the job all that much harder in recent years. Not surprisingly, more and more franchises are putting an emphasis on finding a shutdown cornerback to lead their defense, and contracts for players at the position are reaching all-time highs. With that in mind, here is a look at the top cornerbacks in the game for the upcoming NFL season.

2012 NFL Predictions: Top 5 Cornerbacks

1.      Darrelle Revis, New York Jets

He basically takes away half the field, and Revis is without question the top shutdown corner in the game today. While most teams just avoid throwing at him all together, he still has the ability to make game-changing plays when given the opportunity. Still, his biggest strength is his ability to eliminate the opposition’s best wide receiver. He is strong and physical at the line, and his pure cover skills are the best in the business. A strong argument can be made that no single player covers as much ground as Revis does on defense.

2.      Johnathan Joseph, Houston Texans

After toiling in obscurity in Cincinnati for most of his career, Joseph exploded into the mainstream as the No.1 corner for Houston last year. He went to-to-toe with the top receivers in the NFL, and he won the battle more often than not. Joseph finished the year with four interceptions and 15 passes defensed. With his long arms, leaping ability and speed, he has excellent physical tools and athleticism. Joseph has quietly been one of the league’s best cover corners, and he isn’t a secret anymore.

3.      Cortland Finnegan, St. Louis Rams

Finnegan has been an overachiever since his playing days at Samford, and he has carried a chip on his shoulder all the way to becoming one of the top corners in the NFL. He is nasty, physical player that has flirted with the “dirty” label at times. Still, Finnegan brings a linebacker’s mentality to the position, and he has 175 tackles combined in the last two years alone. He isn’t going to pile up a lot of interceptions, but he provides excellent support in the run game and gets in the head of opposing receivers with his style of play. Finnegan will be playing his first season in St. Louis this year, and it should be a monster one.

4.      Charles Woodson, Green Bay Packers

The former Heisman winner is likely on his way to the Hall of Fame, and Woodson is still one of the best corners in the game heading into his 15th NFL season. He impacts the game in so many ways, and in the last four years, he has totaled more than 300 tackles, nine sacks, 25 interceptions and an incredible seven defensive touchdowns. Plain and simple, Woodson is one of the best all-around corners in the game, and if he has lost a step, it sure doesn’t show.

5.      Nnamdi Asomugha, Philadelphia Eagles

His first year in Philadelphia was a disaster as one of the best cover corners in the game struggled to adjust to the Eagles’ zone scheme. However, one bad year doesn’t change the fact that Asomugha was so good in Oakland that other teams literally avoided him completely. He is one of the larger corners in the league at 6-2, but he still has the speed and agility needed to shutdown possession and slot receivers. With Philadelphia promising to plat more man-to-man coverage on the outside in 2012, Asomugha should remind everyone about just how good he really is.
