2012 NFL Predictions: NFC East Division Odds, Picks and Projections

2012 NFL Predictions: NFC East Division Vegas Odds, Free Picks and Projections: The NFC East was supposed to be one of the power divisions in the NFL last year, but for most of the season, nobody wanted to take control. Philadelphia got off to a terrible start and never recovered, while Dallas blew chance after chance, eventually handing the division crown to the New York Giants in the regular season finale. Of course, New York went on to win the Super Bowl, bolstering the NFC East’s reputation to a degree. However, the Giants went just 9-7 during the regular season, while the Eagles and Cowboys finished 8-8. Yes, the NFC East is still one of the deeper divisions in the NFL, but it remains unpredictable thanks to an overall lack of focus shown by the teams. With that in mind, here is a look at how the division stacks up for the 2012 NFL season.

2012 NFL Predictions: NFC East Division Vegas Odds, Picks and Projections

1.      Philadelphia Eagles (Prediction: 11-5)

It was a rough start for the self-titled Dream Team, but there is no denying the talent and speed that this team possesses on both sides of the ball. Michael Vick is still a dynamic playmaker at quarterback, and LeSean McCoy leads one of the NFL’s best rushing attacks. A healthy Jeremy Maclin and focused DeSean Jackson at receiver should only make an offense that ranked fourth in yards per game last year even more explosive. More importantly, the Eagles added some much-needed bulk on defense, picking up linebacker DeMeco Ryans and drafting defensive tackle Fletcher Cox. The two will be some welcomed muscle to a unit that led the NFL in sacks last year. Philadelphia looked great in the final four games of last season, and there is just too much talent on this team for it not to win.

2.      New York Giants (Prediction: 10-6)

The defending Super Bowl champs still don’t have a running game, and they still don’t have a great secondary. However, they do have Eli Manning under center and a loaded defensive line, and the Giants have used that formula to win two championships in the last five seasons. Manning has emerged as one of the most clutch performers in the game, saving his best work for the fourth quarter and the postseason. With receivers Victor Cruz and Hakeem Nicks stretching the field, this team will have no problem putting points on the board. Meanwhile, Justin Tuck, Jason Pierre-Pail, Osi Umenyiora and the rest of the defensive line should once again help New York challenge for the league lead in sacks. This whole team seems to save its best for the playoffs, and the Giants have already shown that they don’t need a dominant regular season to be a major factor in the postseason.

3.      Dallas Cowboys (Prediction: 8-8)

With Tony Romo running the show, the Cowboys’ offense has the potential to be great. However, receivers Miles Austin and Dez Bryant seem to be constantly battling injuries, and the offensive line is still a work in progress. Running back DeMarco Murray has the potential to be the feature back Dallas has been searching for, but the offense is likely to remain inconsistent. Defensively, outside linebacker DeMarcus Ware is one of the best pass rushers in the game, but this unit needs to dramatically improve its secondary in order for the Cowboys to compete in a division with two other powerful offenses. Drafting cornerback Morris Claiborne was a step in the right direction, but even a talented rookie like Claiborne isn’t going to fix the problem overnight. Throw in the drama and pressure that always seems to come from owner Jerry Jones, and the Cowboys are destined to disappoint again.

4.      Washington Redskins (Prediction: 6-10)

Washington has been searching for a franchise quarterback for what seems like an eternity, and the front office decided to do something about. The Redskins traded a ton of draft picks in order to move up and select Baylor QB Robert Griffin III with the second pick in the draft. Washington hopes that the same big arm and playmaking ability that won him the Heisman Trophy will translate to success in the NFL. While that remains to be seen, Griffin at least has weapons like Santana Moss, Pierre Garcon and Fred Davis to work with in the passing game. On the other hand, the offensive line is far from impressive, which is never a good thing when a rookie is under center. Not to mention that the defense was mediocre last year despite having plenty of playmakers. Griffin may be the future of the franchise, but Washington is still in rebuilding mode.
