2011 Buffalo Bills NFL Odds and Predictions – Bills Super Bowl Odds and AFC Championship Futures

2011 Buffalo Bills NFL Expert Predictions, Picks, 2012 Vegas Super Bowl Odds and Schedule – Buffalo Bills NFL Football Season Preview: The 2010-11 season wasn’t a pretty one for the Buffalo Bills. The offense ranked in the bottom half of the league in nearly every category, while the defense got absolutely gashed by the run – finishing dead last in the NFL. Needless to say the offseason focus for the Bills was on bolstering the defensive unit. Now, the question becomes whether or not the improvements will help and if they will help enough to allow the Bills to bounce back from a 4-12 season.

Buffalo got the rehab project started by drafting defensive tackle Marcel Dareus and re-signing defensive tackle Kyle Williams. The two are expected to be the driving force of the team’s 3-4 defensive base. At linebacker, Nick Barnett was brought in to replace the departed Paul Posluszny, while the Bills take a chance on Shawne Merriman in the hopes of adding a dominant pass rusher. Ultimately, the speed of Dareus’ development and the play of Merriman will determine how far the Bills’ rush defense progresses this season.

While the front seven was upgraded, it did come at the expense of the secondary. Safety Donte Whitner and cornerback Ashton Youboty both left during free agency, leaving rookie Aaron Williams to start right away. The Bills’ pass defense actually ranked third in the NFL last season, but that probably had something to do with the fact that opponents were running wild. That being said, this year’s group certainly looks to be weaker.

Another are that appears to be weaker is the Buffalo offense. The coaching staff is sticking with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick after his respectable 3,000-yard, 23-touchdown campaign. However, Lee Evans was traded away, leaving last year’s breakout star Stevie Johnson as the only proven target. After posting 82 catches for 1,073 yards and 10 scores, Johnson seems capable of carrying the load, but there is no question that defenses can focus solely on him without the deep threat of Evans.

Manning the ground game will be Fred Jackson, who finished last season with nearly 1,000 yards despite sitting a majority of the first five games. C.J. Spiller will likely see some time as well, but he is looking more and more like a bust while Jackson has established himself as a reliable ball carrier. Whoever is getting the carries will have to do so behind a below average offensive line. In short, nothing is going to come easy for the Bills’ offense this season.

In the end, the Bills are still a team in rebuilding mode. While the front office definitely went all out to repair the defensive front, Dareus will have some growing pains and Merriman may or may not be able to return to form. Throw in an offense that features very limited weapons and a secondary that is missing two of its best players, including its best tackler in Whitner, and Buffalo still has more questions than answers. In an AFC East that features Super Bowl contenders New England and New York, the Bills will likely be competing for a spot in the cellar with Miami.
