2012-2013 NBA MVP Odds and Predictions: Favorites, Dark Horses and Sleepers

2012-2013 NBA MVP Odds and Predictions: Favorites, Dark Horses and Sleepers to Win NBA MVp Award: The voting for the NBA’s Most Valuable Player is perhaps the most interesting out of the four major sports. Some years, it goes to the best player on the team with the best record. Other years, it goes to the best player in the league on any playoff team. On occasion, it has even been given to a player that has more or less earned it based on career production rather than one strong season. At times, it has been downright ridiculous. How else can you explain how Steve Nash has won the award twice while Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant both have just one MVP to their name. Either way, you can never be quite sure who will win the NBA MVP, and while LeBron James has had a stranglehold on the award lately, nothing is set in stone. With that in mind, here is a look at some of the top contenders for the top honor for the 2012-13 NBA season.

2012 NBA MVP Odds, Picks and Predictions

The Favorites

Considering he has won the award in three of the last four years, defending league MVP LeBron James could definitely repeat. Last year, he finished third in the NBA in scoring while chipping in almost eight rebounds and more than six assists per game. Not to mention the fact that he can defend any position on the court and posted a career-high 53.1 field goal percentage. James literally does everything on a basketball player can do, and he does most of it at an elite level for a Miami Heat team that is one of the best in the NBA. He is going to be tough to dethrone.

Three-time reigning scoring champ Kevin Durant is going to win an MVP Award at some point in his career. The only question is when it will happen. In addition to his NBA-best 28.0 points per game average last season, Durant also posted career highs in rebounds, assists and field goal percentage. The Oklahoma City Thunder should be in the mix for a title again this season, and if Durant can hit enough big shots along the way, this could be his year.

The Dark Horses

A strong argument can be made that Chris Paul should have won the MVP last season after leading the Los Angeles Clippers to the playoffs. The guy is the total package at the point guard spot. He averages around 20 points per game every year and is able to carry a team offensively when he needs to. More importantly, he makes his teammates better and averages 9.8 assists per game for his career. The fact that he also average more than two steals per game is just icing on the cake. Plain and simple, Paul was piece to the puzzle that made the Clippers a winning franchise last year. If they improve this season, an MVP could be coming his way.

Tim Duncan is getting older and playing fewer and fewer minutes, Manu Ginobili always seems to be banged up, and the role players keep changing, but the San Antonio Spurs have still managed to win the most games in the Western Conference in each of the past two seasons. The team’s success can be tied directly to the still-improving play of Tony Parker, who might be the most underrated play in the NBA. He is coming off a year when he posted career highs in points, assists and free throw percentage, and for the seventh straight year, he shot at least 48.0 percent from the field. If Parker numbers keep trending up and the Spurs keep winning, voters will have to recognize his value.

The Sleepers

In terms of all-around skill, it is tough to find a player with more than Kevin Love. Last season he finished fourth in the NBA in scoring (26.0) and second in rebounding (13.3). He also connected on nearly two 3-pointers game at 37.2 percent and knocked down more than 82 percent of his free throw attempts. Those are pretty strong numbers for a power forward that is a double-double machine. With Minnesota making some solid additions during the offseason, the franchise might finally post the win total that allows Love’s skills to get the respect they deserve. The question is whether or not he can get the new-look Timberwolves into playoff contention.

After a ton of offseason moves, the Brooklyn Nets have assembled a roster that should be able to compete in the Eastern Conference. Point guard Deron Williams was the biggest free agent that the franchise signed, and as a result, he will have the spotlight on him. At his best, Williams is a 20-plus point scorer that can dish out assists as well as anyone in the NBA. He can score from the perimeter or bulldoze his way into the paint and get to the foul line. Williams is healthy and surrounded by the best supporting cast of his career. If the Nets make the playoffs, Williams will be given a lot of the credit.
