2019 Gander RV Duel at Daytona Race No. 2 Odds & Predictions: Favorites & Sleepers

2019 Gander RV Duel Race 2 Odds2019 Gander RV Duel at Daytona Race No. 2 Odds & Predictions – Favorites & Sleepers: I’ve already highlighted my top bets for the first of the Gander RV Duels, but there is still one qualifying race to go before the field for the 2019 Daytona 500 is officially set.

Alex Bowman is set to lead the field to the green in Race No. 2, but there are no shortage of big names lurking. Restrictor-plate track masters Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin are both in the field, and Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott, last year’s Duel winners, are also among the entrants.

Overall, the second duel looks a little deeper from top to bottom, so if you are looking to take a chance on a serious longshot, I’d probably take that chance in Race No. 1. I’d stay a little more mainstream with my bets for this race, and I’ve highlighted a few of my favorites.

The Favorites

Nobody has been better at the restrictor-plate tracks the last few seasons than Joey Logano. His five plate wins are the second most among active drivers, and over the last 10 plate races, he leads the series with two wins, six top-five finishes and seven top-10s. Logano has also scored the most points of any driver over that same stretch. He’s probably the safest bet in the second duel.

When you start looking at the resume Denny Hamlin has amassed at Daytona, you have to be impressed. He owns a win in the Daytona 500 and has won the Clash three times. He is also tied for the most wins in the qualifying races among active drivers with three. When it comes to Daytona, Hamlin just seems to know how to get to victory lane.

Any driver in Team Penske equipment seems to be a force at the restrictor-plate tracks, and Ryan Blaney is a perfect example. Last year was his first with the organization, and he not only won his qualifying race, but he finished in the Top 5 in the Clash and went on to lead the most laps in the Daytona 500. Don’t be surprised if Blaney goes for back-to-back duel wins.

The Contenders

He has had trouble finishing restrictor-plate races during the regular season, but Chase Elliott has been just fine in the duels. In fact, he is going for a personal three-peat after winning his qualifying race in both 2017 and 2018. Elliott is a little riskier than some other big names in this field, but we are trying to pick a winner, and he’s certainly shown he is capable of finding victory lane.

Although he is rarely mentioned among the elite restrictor-plate drivers, Kurt Busch always seems to be near the front in these races. He picked up a Daytona 500 win a couple of years ago, and he ranks third in driver points scored over the last 10 plate races. Busch did switch teams this offseason, but he looked pretty comfortable in his Chip Ganassi Racing ride in the Clash last weekend, notching a runner-up finish. Expect him to be in the hunt Thursday.

He had already enjoyed success at the restrictor-plate tracks before joining Stewart-Haas Racing last year, and Aric Almirola only became more of a threat with SHR. He came within half a lap of winning the 2018 Daytona 500 and went on to win at Talladega in the fall while compiling an 11.5 average finish over the four plate races. He looks poised to be a contender whenever the series visits a superspeedway.

I’m not the biggest fan of Austin Dillon as a driver, but you can’t play favorites when it comes to trying to win some money. The fact is that he has logged seven top-10s in 11 career starts at Daytona, including his win in last year’s Daytona 500. Dillon has proven he can run up front and contend for wins at this track.

Sleeper Special

His Front Row Motorsports team isn’t a big-budget operation, but the organization always seems to be competitive at the plate tracks, and David Ragan knows how to work the draft. He is a former winner at both Daytona and Talladega, and he has four top-10s in the last 10 restrictor-plate races. If you want to take a chance on a longshot, you won’t find one with a better resume than Ragan.
