2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds & Predictions: Favorites & Bad Bets at Darlington Raceway

2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds & Predictions – Favorites and Bad Bets at Darlington Raceway: Coming out of the final off week of the 2019 season, the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to action with one of the biggest races of the season. Darlington Raceway will host Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500, and a win at NASCAR’s oldest superspeedway is something that every driver wants on their resume.

While the Daytona 500 is typically at the top of the list, the Southern 500 ranks alongside the Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis and the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte as one of the crown jewel races of the sport. Not surprisingly, the top drivers from the top teams tend to excel at Darlington, and the list of former winners is loaded with current and future Hall of Famers.

You can’t go wrong by backing big names this weekend, but you still need to know which big names offer you the best bang for your buck. Check out my favorite betting options for Sunday’s Bojangles’ Southern 500 at Darlington Raceway.

2019 Bojangles’ Southern 500 Odds & Predictions: Favorites and Bad Bets at Darlington Raceway

Favorites to Bet

Denny Hamlin (6/1)

Hamlin is the hottest driver in the series right now, and Darlington just might be his best track. He has reeled off six straight top-five finishes, including five straight finishes of third or better, coming into the Southern 500, and his 6.2 average finish at Darlington is the best in the series. Hamlin has 11 top-10s, seven top-five finishes and two wins in 13 starts at the track, and he has led laps in nine of those starts, leading double-digit laps in four straight. Don’t be shy about backing him this weekend.

Martin Truex Jr. (6/1)

He won the Southern 500 in 2016, and if not for a cut tire in the closing laps and a pit road penalty, Truex could have easily won this race three years in a row. He has managed to lead more than 20 laps in three straight starts at Darlington, and with four wins under his belt already in 2019, there is no reason he shouldn’t be one of the main contenders for the win again this weekend.

Kevin Harvick (6/1)

A former Southern 500 winner, Harvick has been gaining momentum with a couple of wins over the last month, and he has been a force at Darlington with his current Stewart-Haas Racing team. He has a 4.2 average finish here in five starts in the SHR No. 4 machine, leading 20-plus laps in four of those five races and leading more than 200 laps twice. Harvick’s strong track record at Darlington combined with his recent surge make him a great betting option this weekend.

Big Names to Avoid

Kyle Busch (7/2)

Although he has piled up plenty of solid finishes at Darlington, Busch really hasn’t dominated here. In fact, he has just one top-five finish in his last six races here, and he has led just a combined 10 laps over the last five races. Busch has also managed just two top-five finishes in the last eight races coming into the Southern 500, so by his lofty standards, he is in a bit of a slump. This doesn’t seem like the time or place to back Busch when he is the overall betting favorite.

Kyle Larson (5/1)

Larson has been excellent at Darlington, and the fact that the track’s preferred groove is the high line fits his driving style perfectly. However, he has yet to win here despite leading a ton of laps, and while he has been running much better in recent weeks, we are still talking about a driver who has just five top-five finishes in 2019 and hasn’t been to victory lane since 2017. I have a tough time backing Larson at 5/1 when there are a bunch of former Darlington winners who are paying more to win.
