2015-Axalta-We-Paint-Winners-400-Odds-Free-Picks-Predictions2015 Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400 Odds, Free Picks & Predictions: Favorites and Contenders: The Cup Series heads to one of the more unusual tracks on the schedule this weekend. Pocono Raceway will host Sunday’s Axalta “We Paint Winners” 400, and rather than the traditional oval layout, Pocono has a triangle shape that challenges drivers with three very different sets of turns. The track’s 2.5-mile distance also makes it one of the biggest on the schedule, and the high speeds produced on the Pocono’s long straightaways are balanced out by flat, sweeping corners that cause a dramatic drop in speed. Fuel mileage often comes into play because of the track’s massive layout, and don’t be surprised if cars go four and five wide on the restarts as drivers try to grab every spot they can.

The Favorites

Coming off his fourth win of the season last weekend, Jimmie Johnson will try for his third career win at Pocono this Sunday. His most recent win came in June of 2013, and he has been particularly dominant in the June race. Johnson has finished sixth or better in five consecutive June races at Pocono, and he has led the most laps of any driver in the last five races at the track overall.

Considering he swept both races at Pocono last year, there is a good chance that Dale Earnhardt Jr. will be contending for the win this weekend. In addition to winning both races in 2014, Junior has also reeled off four straight top-five finishes at Pocono, compiling a series-leading 2.5 average finish in the process and scoring 21 more points than any other driver over the span.

Throughout his impressive career, Jeff Gordon has always remained a threat at Pocono. He owns a series-leading six victories at the track, and two of those wins have come since 2011. Overall, he has amassed 31 Top-10s in 44 starts at Pocono, and he has posted a 5.8 average finish at the track in the last five races.

He actually won at Pocono in his first-ever start at the track, and Denny Hamlin hasn’t slowed down since. He has made four trips to victory lane, and he leads all drivers in laps led, fastest laps run and driver rating at the triangle-shaped track. In 18 total starts, Hamlin has 12 top-10 finishes, including nine top-five finishes.

The Contenders

He is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career, and Kurt Busch should continue to impress this weekend. After all, he is a two-time winner at Pocono, and since 2005, he has an incredible eight finishes of third or better in 19 starts at the track, including two in his last three starts. Busch also ranks second in laps led over the same stretch, and he has a 6.5 average finish at Pocono over the past two seasons.

His overall record at Pocono isn’t overly impressive, but Kasey Kahne has proven he knows how to seal the deal at the track. He is a two-time winner at the track with his most recent victory coming in 2013. He also has three top-10s in his last five starts, including two finishes of second or better. Throw in the fact that Kahne ranks in the top five in both laps led and fastest laps run since 2005, and his upside at Pocono is undeniable.

Although he doesn’t boast the consistency of some of the other stars, Brad Keselowski can certainly get the job done at Pocono. In fact, he appeared headed for a win last summer before trash on his grill opening caused an overheating issue. Even with his bad luck, Keselowski still has four finishes of sixth or better in his last seven starts at Pocono, including a win.

The Sleeper

While he hasn’t won at Pocono in more than a decade, Ryan Newman is a safe bet to be within striking distance this weekend. Not only has Newman managed to finish in the top 15 in 13 straight races at Pocono, but he also has seven top-10s in his last eight starts at the track, including five straight.
