2013 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Vegas Favorites and Sleepers

2013-Quicken-Loans-400-Odds-and-Predictions2013 Quicken Loans 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Quicken Loans 400 Favorites and Sleepers to Win on Sunday June 16, 2013 at Michigan International Speedway: The Cup Series heads to Michigan International Speedway this weekend, and the 2.0-mile, D-shaped oval regularly produces speeds of more than 200 mph. Meanwhile, drivers can move through the field if they have a fast car thanks to the track’s wide surface that allows for side-by-side racing. Despite the track’s speed-friendly and pass-friendly layout, races at Michigan also have a tendency to come down fuel mileage and pit strategy because of the long green flag runs that often occur.

Last June, all was right in the NASCAR world for at least one afternoon as fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr. went to victory lane. The win snapped a four-year winless drought, and it came in dominant fashion. Junior led 95 of the 200 laps and comfortably beat Tony Stewart and the Roush Fenway Racing duo of Matt Kenseth and Greg Biffle to the line. The top-four finishers had the best cars most of the afternoon, combining to lead 168 of the 200 laps.

The Favorites

No active driver in the series has been more consistent at Michigan than Carl Edwards. His 8.2 average finish at track leads all drivers, and he has finished worse than 12th just twice in 17 career starts. More importantly, Edwards has collected nine top-five finishes at Michigan and has made two trips to victory lane. Year in and year out, Edwards has been a contender at the 2.0-mile oval, and that shouldn’t change this weekend.

When the Cup Series last visited Michigan, Greg Biffle emerged with the victory. Of course, winning at the track is nothing new for Biffle, and in 20 starts at MIS, he has made three trips to victory lane and has nine top-five finishes. Throw in the fact that his 11.8 average finish is the fourth best among active drivers, and Biffle has a track record for both running near the front on a regular basis and closing the deal at Michigan.

The Dark Horses

In typical Tony Stewart fashion, he is heating up along with the weather. After a miserable start to the year, he has posted a 4.0 average finish in the last three races, and he now heads to a Michigan track where he has always run well. Stewart is a former winner at MIS, and he has five top-10 finishes in his last six starts at the track. Stewart finished second in the June race at the track one year ago, and he has a great shot at his second win of the season this weekend.

Since the start of the 2008 season, Dale Earnhardt Jr. has only managed to win two Cup Series races. However, both of those victories came at Michigan. In fact, Junior is the defending winner of this weekend’s race, and he finished first and fourth in his two starts at MIS in 2012. For whatever reason, he just seems to excel at Michigan and similar tracks, and in the last four races at 2.0-mile tracks, he has a 2.5 average finish and has scored the most points in the series.

He desperately needs to win some races if he wants to make the Chase, and Denny Hamlin has a golden opportunity to notch his first win of 2013 this weekend. After all, he has finished in the top 10 in five of his eight starts at Michigan since 2009. More importantly, Hamlin has finished third or better four times during the stretch and has made two trips to victory lane.

Sleeper Special

Although he has never even managed a top-five finish at Michigan heading into this weekend’s race, Clint Bowyer could be primed for a breakout performance. He has finished in the top 10 in his last four starts at the track, giving him the longest active streak of top-10s at MIS of any driver in the series. It is only a matter of time before all Bowyer’s solid finishes at Michigan leads to a great one.

Big Name to Avoid

Early in Joey Logano’s career, Michigan was actually one of his best tracks, but his fortunes have changed dramatically in recent years. After collecting three top-10s in his first four starts at MIS, Logano has failed to crack the top 15 in his last four starts. More concerning is the fact that he has finished outside the top 20 in his last three starts at the track, including back-to-back finishes outside the top 30.
