2013 Cheez-It 355 at The Glen Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-Cheez-It-355-Odds-Predictions-and-Free-Picks2013 Cheez-It 355 at The Glen Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs : For the final time this year, the Cup Series heads to a road course for this weekend’s running of the Cheez-It 355 at Watkins Glen International. Road racing is one of the more unique skills a stock car driver has to master, and that fact alone makes Watkins Glen a track ripe for upsets. After all, Marcos Ambrose and Juan Pablo Montoya are among the current drivers that have won their only races at road courses, and Martin Truex Jr. snapped a six-year winless drought at a road course earlier this year, and over the years, drivers like Kyle Petty, Geoffrey Bodine, Steve Park and Robby Gordon are among the underdogs that have won a road course race. With that in mind, here is a closer look at few drivers that could continue the trend of longshot winner this weekend at Watkins Glen.

Considering he has a very respectable road course resume, especially at Watkins Glen, it is a bit of surprise to see Martin Truex Jr. listed at 22/1 odds to win this weekend. After all, he has finished in the top 15 in five of his seven starts at The Glen, including three straight. Truex has also finished in the top 10 in his two most recent starts at the track, including a career-best fourth-place run in 2011. Meanwhile, Truex is gunning for a season sweep of the road courses after delivering a dominating win at Sonoma a couple of months ago that snapped a six-year winless drought. Based on his recent numbers at Watkins Glen and his performance at Sonoma, Truex deserves to be considered one of the up-and-coming road course aces in the Cup Series. Bettors may want to jump on his 22/1 odds before he wins another road race and becomes one of the favorites.

There is bad luck, and then there is the luck that Denny Hamlin has been having lately. From engine failures and blown tires to getting caught up in wrecks, it has been one bad break after another for Hamlin. That being said, he has won too many races at the Cup level to only be a 33/1 longshot to win this weekend. Hamlin is a 22-time winner in the Cup series, and 14 of those wins have come since 2010. At Watkins Glen specifically, Hamlin has logged four top-10s in seven starts and has finished as high as second. Yes, he has been in a slump, but bettors can take advantage of the situation and to grab a driver that has led the series in wins twice in the last three years at very friendly odds. As soon as Hamlin breaks out of his slump, his odds are going to return to normal. The window to hit it big with Hamlin won’t be open long.

I was shocked to see A.J. Allmendinger only getting 66/1 odds to win this weekend at Watkins Glen. He has an extensive background in road racing, and he has already had a lot of success at road courses in the Cup Series. In fact, he has been one of the most consistent drivers in the series at Watkins Glen. He has finished in the top-15 in all four of his starts at The Glen, and his 9.0 average finish is the fourth best in the series. Meanwhile, he has finished in the top 10 in each of the last two starts at the track, finishing as high as fourth. Allmendinger will also be driving the No. 47 Toyota for JTG Daugherty Racing this weekend, and Marcos Ambrose reeled off three straight top-three finishes for the team from 2008 to 2010. Allmendinger might only be a part-time driver in the Cup Series, but he the road racing talent and equipment to win this weekend at The Glen. He could be a steal at his current odds.

For someone reason, Brian Vickers continues to be overlooked by oddsmakers despite several strong runs for Michael Waltrip Racing in a part-time role. In fact, Vickers was in victory lane at New Hampshire the last time he was behind the wheel of a Cup car. Overall, he has finished in the top 15 in four of his five starts for MWR this season, and in three road course starts with the organization, he has two top-15s, including a top-five finish. Vickers actually lost an engine before he even got a chance to turn a single lap at Watkins Glen last year so his 43rd-place finish had nothing to do with his own abilities. Vickers has been contending for wins since he signed with MWR in 2012, and there is no reason to expect that to change this weekend. At 66/1 odds, bettors should jump on board.
