2013 AAA 400 Free Picks: Betting on Underdogs for Big Payoffs

2013-AAA-400-Odds-Free-Picks-and-Predictions2013 AAA 400 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions: Jimmie Johnson the Vegas Favorite: The Cup Series returns to Dover International Speedway this weekend for the third race in the Chase, and thus far, the Chasers have been dominating the action in the playoffs. However, there is a chance that a trip to the “Monster Mile” could change that or at least end Matt Kenseth’s stranglehold on the rest of the field. After all, Jimmie Johnson and Ryan Newman are the only drivers to win multiple races in the last 10 fall races at Dover, and the last five races at the track overall have been one by different drivers. With that in mind, here is a closer look at some of the underdogs among the Chasers and among the non-Chasers that could deliver an upset at Dover this weekend.

Regardless of the series, Joey Logano has always had a good feel for Dover. In fact, he has reeled off three straight wins at the track in the Nationwide Series and three straight top-10s in the Cup Series. Logano actually has five top-10s in his last seven Cup starts at Dover, including a seventh-place run earlier this year. At his current 22/1 odds, bettors will have a tough time finding a more accomplished driver at the track getting more favorable odds.

As he has bounced between rides, Brian Vickers has only been behind the wheel of two of the last seven races at Dover. However, he ran well in both events. Vickers finished in the top 15 in both starts at Dover in 2011, including a fifth-place run. Vickers has been stout nearly all season, and he has been running particularly well since taking over the No. 55 full time a few weeks ago. He could be a steal at his current 33/1 odds.

Bettors shouldn’t let Mark Martin’s 50/1 odds to win full them this weekend. The veteran has always been stout at Dover, and he hasn’t been slowing down late in his career. In fact, Martin’s 9.0 average finish in the last 10 races at the track is the third best in the series, and during the stretch, he has four finishes of fourth or better. Martin finished third at Dover last fall and ninth earlier this season, and this weekend, he will be driving the No. 14 Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy that won at the track with Tony Stewart in June. Martin is more than capable of completing a season sweep for the No. 14 team while delivering bettors a sizeable payout in the process.

His career record at Dover doesn’t exactly inspire confidence, but Juan Pablo Montoya deserves consideration from bettors this weekend for a couple of reasons. For one, he is a 50/1 long shot to win so the payout would be nice. More importantly, Montoya finished a career-best second at Dover earlier this year, and he actually came within three laps of winning the race before being passed. Maybe the strong run was a fluke, but at his current odds, it is worth a small wager to find out.

Bettors looking for a serious longshot this weekend should definitely consider A.J. Allmendinger. For one, he has finished in the top 15 in four of his last six starts at Dover, and he has three top-10s during the stretch. More importantly, Allmendinger came close to winning at the track in the fall of 2010, leading more than 100 laps before a cut tire forced him to pit under green. At his current 250/1 odds, why not take a chance on a driver that nearly won  at Dover just a couple of years ago.
