Is there anything more pressure packed than a winner-take-all race with a $1 million payoff? How about racing for the chance to get into the high-paying event? The Sprint Showdown is the last chance race for all the drivers not already eligible for Saturday’s All-Star Race. The top two finishers in the Showdown transfer to the main event, and even though they have to start at the back of the field, several drivers have transferred through the Showdown and gone on to win the All-Star Race.

Last season, there wasn’t much drama in the Showdown. David Ragan sat on the pole for the event, led a race-high 22 laps and went to Victory Lane to secure a spot in the All-Star Race. Meanwhile, Brad Keselowski led the remaining 18 laps, finishing second and securing the other transfer spot in the main event. Track position was crucial all race, and Ragan and Keselowski had it from the start and never gave it up.

The Favorites – 2012 Sprint Showdown Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His career numbers at Charlotte aren’t great, but Dale Earnhardt Jr. is a former winner of the All-Star Race. He is also third in points and leading the Cup Series with eight top-10 finishes this season. Of the drivers in the Showdown this season, no one has been more consistent than Junior. He should have no problem securing a transfer spot and making a run at another All-Star Race win.

He is in the middle of a career year, and Martin Truex Jr. has nearly won two of the four races leading into All-Star weekend. More importantly, he is a two-time winner of the Sprint Showdown, including as recently as 2010. Truex doesn’t have a great record at Charlotte during the regular season, but he has had a lot of success in the Showdown and the All-Star Race. With as well as he has been running in 2012, he should be able to earn a transfer spot in the main event.

Consistency remains an issue for Joey Logano, but has enjoyed nothing but success at Charlotte in his young career. He leads all drivers with an 8.2 average finish in six starts and has yet to finish outside the top 15 at the track. Logano also has four top-10s at Charlotte, including a career-best third-place finish last May in the Coca-Cola 600. His past success at the track could bode well for his chances of transferring to the All-Star Race.

Although he had a rough year at Charlotte last season, Jamie McMurray has had a number of really strong runs at the track throughout his career. He is a two-time winner at the track, and he finished first and second in his two starts at Charlotte in 2010. McMurray has been far from consistent, but with two wins under his belt at Charlotte, he has to be considered a potential factor to contend in the Showdown.

Sleeper Specials – 2012 Sprint Showdown Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His first season with Penske Racing hasn’t exactly gone as planned, but A.J. Allmendinger could erase some frustration with a strong showing Saturday night. He appeared to figure out Charlotte last season, finishing fifth and seventh in his two starts. Penske Racing drivers Brad Keselowski and Sam Hornish Jr. have both claimed transfer spots in the Showdown in recent years, and Allmendinger could continue to the tradition this weekend.

He has kind of faded into irrelevancy these days, but a 40-lap dash is just the type of race that suits Juan Pablo Montoya. He is aggressive to the extreme, and that attitude can work in such a condensed race when track position is so crucial. Throw in the fact that Montoya has three straight top-15 finishes at Charlotte, and he could storm into the All-Star Race or crash trying.
