2012 Bank of America 500 Odds, Free Picks and Predictions – Bank of America 500 Favorites and Sleepers to Win at Charlotte Motor Speedway in Concord, North Carolina: The Cup Series heads back to Charlotte Motor Speedway, but Saturday night’s race will have a very different feel. Unlike the Coca-Cola 600 in May that ends up being a war of attrition, the intensity will pick up a lot quicker this weekend with 100 fewer miles to work with. Expect hard racing sooner rather than later, and at one of the faster ovals in the series, don’t be surprised to see a few big names make early exits.

Auto Racing

Last fall, Matt Kenseth found a measure of redemption. After dominating the May event at Charlotte only to have fuel mileage cost him a win, Kenseth turned the tables. Tony Stewart and Kyle Busch combined to lead 205 of the 334 laps, but it was Kenseth getting by Busch late in the race that ended up getting to Victory Lane. Three drivers actually led more laps than Kenseth on the night, but he was out front when it counted.

Earlier this year, it appeared Greg Biffle was heading for his first career win at Charlotte. He led 204 of the 400 laps and was the car to beat for the first half of the race. However, his car faded just a bit as night set in and track temperatures cooled, opening the door for Kasey Kahne. His car took off on the later stages of the race, and he cruised to his third career Coca-Cola 600 victory ahead of Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch. For Kahne, it was his first win with his new Hendrick Motorsports team.

The Favorites – 2012 Bank of America 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

After winning the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte in May, there is no doubt that Kasey Kahne knows how to get to Victory Lane at the track. His four victories at Charlotte since the start of the 2006 season are the most in the Cup Series. During the stretch, Kahne has nine finishes of eighth or better in 13 starts at the track, including seven finishes of fourth or better. A season sweep is a definite possibility this weekend.

His career numbers at Charlotte stack up with the all-time greats, and Jimmie Johnson is always a threat when the series visits the 1.5-mile track. He is a six-time winner at Charlotte in his career, and his 10.7 average finish is the second best among active drivers. In his 10 starts at the track in the fall, Johnson has eight finishes of sixth or better.

The Dark Horses – 2012 Bank of America 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Although he hasn’t won at Charlotte yet, Denny Hamlin has been getting closer and closer to breaking through. He has four straight top-10 finishes at the track, including a career best second-place run earlier this year. Since the start of the 2010 season, Hamlin is tied for the series lead with four wins at 1.5-mile tracks. Charlotte could become the next track he adds to that total at.

Not only is Matt Kenseth the defending winner of this weekend’s race, but he has been rock solid at Charlotte, as well. He has seven straight top-15 finishes at the track and has cracked the top 10 six times during the stretch. Kenseth has two career win at Charlotte overall, and he could make it three by winning back-to-back fall events at the track this weekend.

Missing the Chase hasn’t stopped Kyle Busch from stringing together strong finish after strong finish, and this could be the week he gets to Victory Lane. In his last 10 starts at Charlotte, he has finished eighth or better nine times. More importantly, he has six finishes of third or better during the stretch, including second-place finishes in each of the last two fall races at the track.

Sleeper Special – 2012 Bank of America 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

Reigning Nationwide Series champ Ricky Stenhouse Jr. will make just his third Cup start of the year this weekend, but he could make some noise this weekend. In his lone career Cup start at Charlotte, he finished a very solid 11th. Stenhouse has finished in the top 20 in all three of his career Cup starts, and he should only get better as he gains experience. Not to mention that he is driving for a Roush Fenway Racing team that has put at least three cars in the top 10 in each of the last two races at Charlotte. Stenhouse is getting ready for next season when he will jump to the Cup Series full time, and he is already capable of pulling off an upset.

Big Name to Avoid – 2012 Bank of America 500 Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His title hopes probably came to an end last weekend when he was spun while leading on the final lap at Talladega, and Tony Stewart isn’t likely to start a rally at Charlotte. He has just a single top-10 finish in his last nine starts at the 1.5-mile track and has finished outside the top 15 five times during the stretch. Stewart is a former winner at Charlotte, but since his win in the fall of 2003, he has not recorded another top-five finish. Don’t expect anything spectacular from the defending champ this weekend.
