With the Chase officially underway, drivers will trade in the high speeds of Chicagoland for the flat corners of New Hampshire Motor Speedway this weekend. There has been plenty of bumping and banging at the 1.0-mile track over the years, especially in the Chase. Last season, eventual champion Jimmie Johnson and eventual runner-up Denny Hamlin were both among the drivers involved in incidents. In other words, nobody gets a break at NHMS, even if they are competing for the title.

In last year’s Chase opener, Tony Stewart appeared poised to grab the early lead in the championship fight. He led 100 laps and had a comfortable lead with one lap to go. However, he ran out of fuel shortly after taking the white flag, turning the lead over to Clint Bowyer. Bowyer cruised to an easy win – the second of his career at NHMS. Bowyer and Stewart combined to lead all but 23 laps on the afternoon.

Earlier this year, it was all about Stewart-Haas Racing. Ryan Newman and Stewart started first and second, and the duo still held the top two spots when the checkered flag flew. Newman led a race-high 119 laps and held off a hard-charging Stewart in the closing laps. It was Newman’s third career win at NHMS and the first 1-2 finish for the teammates. Kurt Busch was the other major player, but he faded late in the race after getting stuck back in traffic.

The Favorites – 2011 Sylvania 300Odds, Predictions and Free Picks

His title chances are already in serious jeopardy, but Denny Hamlin could still win a few races before the 2011 season comes to a close. He has never finished outside the top 15 in 11 starts at New Hampshire, compiling the best average finish among active drivers. Hamlin is a former winner at the track, and he second in last year’s Chase event and third earlier this season.

He is riding a streak of 12 straight top-15 finishes at New Hampshire, and Jeff Gordon could add to that mark in a big way this weekend. He has finished fourth or better five times during the streak, including three second-place finishes. Two of Gordon’s three victories in 2011 have come at flat tracks, and NHMS is as flat as any track on the Cup Series schedule.

Not only is Jimmie Johnson a three-time winner at New Hampshire, but he has finished in the top 10 in eight of his last nine starts at the track. Johnson has finished in the top five in three of his last four starts, including a fifth-place effort at NHMS in July. More importantly, two of Johnson’s three wins at the track have come in the fall race.

The Dark Horses – 2011 Sylvania 300 Lines, Preview and Expert Picks

Stewart-Haas Racing teammates Tony Stewart and Ryan Newman should both be threats to win at New Hampshire this weekend. Earlier this year, the duo started first and second and finished in the same order. The two have combined for five career wins at the track, with Stewart finishing second in two of his last three starts and Newman finishing in the top 10 in four straight, including his win in July.

Kurt Busch is a three-time winner at New Hampshire, and he has been on the mark at the track in recent years. He has finished in the top 15 in seven straight starts, including six finishes of 10th or better. Earlier this year, Busch led the second-most laps of any driver at NHMS before the wrong pit strategy trapped him back in traffic.

Although he missed the Chase and has been struggling lately, Clint Bowyer could still make some noise this weekend. After all, he is the defending winner of the race after leading more than half the laps last fall. Not to mention the fact that New Hampshire is the only track where Bowyer has won multiple times in his Cup career. He has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts at NHMS.

New Hampshire remains the site of Joey Logano’s first and only Cup win at this point in his career, but the young drivers could add to that win total this weekend. He has finished in the top 10 in three of his last five starts at the track, including an encouraging fourth-place finish earlier this season. Given Logano’s flat track success, it isn’t a surprise that he runs well at NHMS.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 Sylvania 300 Betting Odds, Predictions and Free NASCAR Picks

Not only has Matt Kenseth never won a race at New Hampshire, but he hasn’t even been competitive at the track in recent years. He has finished outside the top 15 in seven straight starts, including five finishes of 20th or worse. Plain and simple, the former Cup champion just doesn’t run well at NHMS.

It has been ugly for Paul Menard when it comes to racing at New Hampshire. In nine career starts at the track, he has never cracked the top 20. In fact, he has finished outside the top 25 in six of his nine attempts. At this point, a top-15 finish would seem like a win for Menard.
