For the second time this year, the Cup Series will visit Michigan International Speedway. The D-shaped, 2.0-mile oval is known for its three-wide racing and fuel mileage finishes. Fast cars have plenty of room to pass at MIS, but pit strategy often decides the final outcome. Michigan is one of those unpredictable tracks where the outcome can be in doubt until the checkered flag finally waves.

Last August, Greg Biffle and Tony Stewart appeared to have the cars to beat for most of the afternoon, and Biffle even led a race-high 66 laps. However, Kevin Harvick’s car came to life late in the race on long runs, and Denny Hamlin and others decided to roll the dice to gain track position late in the closing laps. With Stewart and Biffle stuck in traffic on fresh tires, Hamlin stormed to the lead. Harvick ran him down and eventually completed the winning pass with less than five laps to go. It denied Hamlin the season sweep and gave Harvick his first career victory at Michigan.

Earlier this season, Hamlin got some revenge. He again used pit strategy to take the lead late in the race. This time around, he was able to hold off challenges from Matt Kenseth and Kyle Busch to lead the final eight laps and win at MIS for the second time in his last three starts. Biffle was the hard-luck loser yet again, leading a race-high 68 laps but finishing 15th.

The Favorites – 2011 Pure Michigan 400 Lines and Odds

He is gunning for the season sweep this weekend, and Denny Hamlin has been on a tear at Michigan lately. He has two wins and a second-place finish in his last three starts at the track, and he has finished outside the top 15 only once in 11 career starts. Hamlin has a 5.5 average finish in his last five starts at MIS, making him one of the top options for bettors this weekend.

The numbers on Carl Edwards at Michigan are pretty darn impressive. In 14 career starts, he has finished 12th or better 13 times and seventh or better 11 times. Edwards is a two-time winner at the track, and he has finished in the top-five in each of his last two starts. Plain and simple, Edwards is always in the mix for the win.

After coming up a few feet short of winning at Michigan in June, Matt Kenseth will be out to close the deal this weekend. Since 2001, he has finished outside the top 15 only twice in 20 starts. He has picked up two wins at the track during the stretch, along with top-five finishes in his last two starts.

Although he has been anything but lucky at Michigan lately, Greg Biffle has had fast car after fast car. He has finished in the top 15 in five of his last six starts at the track, and he has led the most laps in the last two races. Biffle is a two-time winner at MIS, and if he can just catch a break, he could pick up win No. 3 this weekend.

He has been up and down at Michigan throughout his career, but Kyle Busch has been on a tear in recent weeks. Busch has piled up a series-leading 12 top-five finishes in 2011 and currently sits atop the standings. He is also tied for the series lead with three wins, and he finished a strong third at MIS in June. Plain and simple, Busch is running too well and is too talented not to take a chance on this weekend.

If Brian Vickers’ season had to be summed up in one word, the word would be ugly. That being said, it only takes one good week to put a driver back in Victory Lane, and Vickers runs very well at Michigan. He won at the track in the fall of 2009, and his 10th-place finish earlier this year was his sixth straight top-10 at the track. Vickers could surprise this weekend.

After sputtering most of the year, Joey Logano is finally picking up speed. He has four top-five finishes this year and three have come in the last six races. Logano is also heading to one of his better tracks this weekend. He has finished in the top 20 in all but one start at MIS, and he has finished in the top 10 in three of his last four starts.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 Pure Michigan 400 Odds and Predictions

Michigan International Speedway is one of only a few tracks on the schedule where Jimmie Johnson has never won. In fact, he hasn’t even had a top-five finish at MIS since 2007, and he has just two career top-five efforts in 19 starts. Johnson’s 15.1 average finish at the track isn’t terrible, but it is also well below the numbers the five-time champ usually puts up.

In 2003 and 2004, Ryan Newman won back-to-back races at Michigan. In the 14 races since the victories, he hasn’t had a single top-five finish and only one top-10. Newman did finish sixth at the track earlier this year, but there is no denying that he hasn’t been close to the same driver that won a pair of races a few years back.
