Bristol Motor Speedway has had plenty of nicknames and slogans attached to it over the years. From Thunder Valley and the bullring to the toughest ticket in NASCAR and racing the way it ought to be, the half-mile, high-banked short track has provided plenty of highlights over the years. The physical racing has been lessened slightly by changes to the track layout in recent years, but the bump-and-run is still waiting to change the outcome of a race in the final laps.

Last August, Kyle Busch capped a dominant night with an aforementioned bump-and-run on David Reutimann in the later stages of the race. Busch led a race-high 283 laps, but Reutimann used pit strategy to get out front late in an attempt to steal the win. Busch wasn’t having it, and he bumped his way by Reutimann and drove away to an easy win. Despite coming up short, Reutimann deserves a lot of credit for his second-place run considering he was battling food poisoning. Jimmie Johnson was the only other driver to challenge Busch, leading 175 laps before being wrecked by Juan Pablo Montoya on a restart.

Earlier this year, Busch and Johnson once again found themselves with the top two cars in the field. Johnson led a race-high 164 laps, but it was Busch getting to Victory Lane. He led 154 laps and held off Carl Edwards for his fifth career win at Bristol and his second in a row. Roush Fenway Racing had a solid afternoon as an organization, placing three cars in the top eight, including runner-up Edwards.

The Favorites – 2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race Lines and Odds

He is going for a Bristol three-peat this weekend, and Kyle Busch is hands down the favorite this weekend. He has five career wins at the track, including four in his last five starts. He has a total of seven top-two finishes in 13 career Bristol starts, and his 8.7 average finish is the best among active drivers.

After struggling at Bristol early in his career, Jimmie Johnson has figured out the half-mile track in recent years. He has three finishes of third or better in his last five starts, including a victory in March of 2010. Johnson also led 175 laps at Bristol last August and led a race-high 164 laps earlier this season on his way to a third-place finish.

Although his younger brother has stolen the show in recent years, Kurt Busch is a five-time winner at Bristol in his own right. He has four straight top-10 finishes at the track as well, along with eight straight top-15 runs. A victory this weekend would not only snap Kyle’s winning streak, but it would give Kurt the edge in total victories at the track. Sibling rivalry never ends.

The Dark Horses – 2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race Betting Odds and Free Tips

Matt Kenseth is a two-time winner at Bristol, and he has four straight top-10 finishes at the track. He also has six top-10 finishes in his last seven starts, including a strong fourth-place effort earlier this year. Kenseth has two top-five finishes in his last three starts, and a third career Bristol win could be in the works.

He gave away a potential win last weekend, but Greg Biffle won’t have to wait long to get another chance at a victory. He has four straight top-10 finishes at the track, including a pair of fourth-place finishes. Biffle has never won at the track, but his 10.6 average finish is the third-best among active drivers. He is always near the front at Bristol, and it is only a matter of time before he gets a win.

Sleepers Specials – 2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race Vegas Odds and Free Picks

In three starts at Bristol, Brad Keselowski has never finished outside the top 20. More importantly, he has been on an absolute roll in recent weeks. Keselowski has finishes of first, second and third in the three races leading up to Bristol, and he is just too hot not to consider a threat to win.

Although he has never won at Bristol, Ryan Newman has excelled at the track since the progressive banking was added. He has five top-10 finishes in his last six starts at the track and has an 8.4 average finish during the stretch. Newman has enjoyed a resurgent 2011 season, and this could be his chance to break through at Bristol.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 IRWIN Tools Night Race Odds and Predictions

He has won a pole at Bristol, but the success in qualifying hasn’t translated to race day for Joey Logano. He has five finishes outside the top 15 in five career starts, including four finishes outside the top 20. Logano has a dismal 28.0 average finish at Bristol.

From 2008 to 2009, Denny Hamlin reeled off four straight finishes of sixth or better at Bristol. In his last three starts, he hasn’t cracked the top 15. Hamlin has also finished outside the top 30 in his last two starts at Bristol, and he enters the race coming off another disappointing finish. He is slumping at Bristol and overall, which isn’t exactly an enticing combination for bettors.
