Next to the Daytona 500, this weekend’s Brickyard 400 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway is the one race that every driver dreams about winning. No track has more history in the sport of auto racing, and kissing the bricks has quickly become entrenched as a NASCAR tradition. Since being added to the schedule in 1994, Victory Lane has been reserved almost exclusively for the sports elite. Thirteen of the 16 races at the Brickyard have been won by drivers with Cup Series title on their resumes.

Last year, Jamie McMurray became the newest driver to kiss the bricks and just the third non-champion to do so. Juan Pablo Montoya dominated the event, but a decision to take four tires with 18 laps to go cost him too much track position and ended his hopes of winning. Meanwhile, McMurray and Kevin Harvick were among a group of drivers that took just two tires. Harvick appeared to have the race in hand until a late caution set up a double-file restart. McMurray got the better of Harvick on start and used the clean air to hold off the No. 29.

The Favorites – 2011 Brickyard 400 Lines and Odds

Indiana native Tony Stewart has given his home state fans plenty to cheer about at Indy over the years. He is a two-time winner at the track, and is 8.7 average finish in the past decade is the second-best among active drivers. Stewart has finished eighth or better in six of his last seven starts at the Brickyard, including top-five finishes in both 2009 and 2010. He will be looking to kiss the bricks for a third time this weekend.

Jeff Gordon’s four victories at Indianapolis are the most in NASCAR history. Two of those wins have come in the last decade when Gordon has tallied a series-best eight top-10 finishes at the track and series-leading 7.6 average finish. Plain and simple, no driver has been more consistent at the Brickyard the Gordon.

He came up just short of a second Brickyard victory last season, and Kevin Harvick will look to close the deal this weekend. He has finished eighth or better in seven of his last nine starts at the track, posting three top-three finishes during the stretch. In addition to his 2003 win, Harvick has been passed for the lead during the final 10 laps in two other occasions. He knows how to get to the front.

The Dark Horses – – 2011 Brickyard 400 Betting Odds and Tips

After finishing second in his Brickyard debut, Juan Pablo Montoya appeared to be a lock to become the first driver to win both the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400. Four years later, he is still trying to accomplish the feat, but he sure has been close. Montoya has led the most laps at Indy in each of the last two seasons, only to see a pit road speeding penalty and poor pit strategy cost him potential victories. He is as good as any driver at the 2.5-mile track.

His three victories at Indy are the second most all-time, but Jimmie Johnson has been the ultimate boom or bust driver at the track. In his last seven starts at the Brickyard, he has three wins, along with four finishes outside the top 20. In fact, he finished outside the top 35 three times during the stretch. History says Johnson is either going to end up kissing the bricks this weekend or end up in the garage.

Sleepers Specials – 2011 Brickyard 400 Odds and Free Picks

He is starting to string together some solid finishes, and Joey Logano could ride the momentum to a solid run at Indy this weekend. After all, he has finished 12th and ninth in his only two starts at track, and flat tracks have yielded some of his best results, including his only win. Logano has been a disappointment for the most part in 2011, but a win at the Brickyard would erase all the failures.

After struggling in his first three starts at Indianapolis, Paul Menard delivered a career-best 14th-place finish at the track last year. This season, he will be driving for a Richard Childress Racing team that placed three cars in the top-six spots in last year’s Brickyard 400. Menard should receive quite a boost from his RCR equipment, and it might just be enough to pull off an upset.

Big Names to Avoid – 2011 Brickyard 400 Odds and Predictions

Although he is coming off a win at New Hampshire, Ryan Newman is anything but a safe pick this weekend. He has failed to crack the top 10 in his last eight starts at Indianapolis, and he has managed just a single top-10 in 10 career attempts. For whatever reason, he can’t see to figure out this track.

He is limping into this weekend’s race at Indy, and things could get worse for Dale Earnhardt Jr. He has finished outside the top 10 in eight of his last nine starts at the track and has finished outside the top 20 six times during the stretch. A top-10 seems like a reach for Junior at this point, let alone a win.
