2019 NL Central Division Odds & Predictions – MLB Baseball Betting Preview

Projected Division Champion

St Louis Cardinals(+190 Odds to Win)

The Cardinals finished 88-74 last season and failed to reach the MLB Playoffs for the 3rd straight season. That is unacceptable for this proud franchise and the front office decided to take action. They had already gave manager Mike Matheny a pink slip after starting just 47-46 last season and gave the job to Mike Shildt. The club responded and finished 41-28 since he took over. Then in the offseason the front office made a splash by trading for former Diamondsback slugger Paul Goldschmidt to bolster the middle of their lineup. Goldschmidt hit 33 dingers, batted .290 and knocked in 83 runs last season in Arizona. He should help a St Louis offense that finished 17th in batting and 10th in runs scored last year. The Cardinals pitching staff was solid last year finishing 12th in ERA despite having guys injured. Look for Carlos Martinez and Michael Wacha to return to the rotation this season and give St Louis a much better rotation to work with this year.

Projected Wild Card

Chicago Cubs(+185 Odds to Win)

Chicago made the playoffs for the 4th straight year last season when they finished 95-68 overall. The Cubs finished 2nd in the NL Central after they lost the tiebreaker at Wrigley Field to Milwaukee. They then finished their season with a whimper after they lost the Wild Card to Colorado, also at Wrigley. What an embarrassment. The Cubs look to get back on track this season and appear to be in great position to do that. Chicago had the league’s 3rd best batting average as a team but were just 22nd in home runs. A big reason was slugger Kris Bryant being hampered by a shoulder injury and only playing 102 games. He returns fully healthy this season and that should be a big boost toe Chicago’s power game. The Cubs pitching is very good and a rotation with Jon Lester, Kyle Hendricks, Cole Hamels and Jose Quintana is one of the best in the game.

Possible Wild Card

Milwaukee Brewers(+250 Odds to Win)

The Brewers won the NL Central Division last season going 96-67 including the tiebreaker game win over the Cubs. Milwaukee got a MVP season from outfielder Christian Yelich who batted .326, hit 36 home runs, drove in 110 runs and stole 22 bags. The Brewers made a helluva trade for Yelich last offseason when they stole him from the Miami Marlins for four prospects. Yelich will once again lead a powerful Brewers offense that finished 4th in the bigs lat year in home runs. Milwaukee’s pitching staff finished 5th in the majors last season in team ERA and are a solid group. However, they still lack a true ace and the jury is out if Milwaukee can match that overall performance as a staff this season. Add that to the fact we expect Yelich to come back to earth a little bit and we look for Milwaukee to take a step back in 2019.

No Chance at Making Playoffs

Pittsburgh Pirates(+1500 Odds to Win)

The Pirates finished 82-79 last season and that was a 7 game jump from the 75-87 team in 2017. Pittsburgh has a solid club but lack the power offensively and the depth in the pitching staff to climb up the ladder in the NL Central. The Pirates finished just 25th in the majors in home runs last season and 20th in runs scored. The pitching staff was 14th in ERA. Look for Pittsburgh to keep building but it may not necessarily show up in an improved record this season.

Cincinnati Reds(+1500 Odds to Win)

Cincinnati was awful again last season finishing 67-95. It was the 4th straight season the Reds won 68 or fewer games and finished dead last in the NL Central. Guess what? They are going to challenge both of those marks again this season as they are still terrible. The offense is mediocre at best and the pitching is terrible. It’s going to be another long season for suffering Reds fans.
