2011 Preakness Stakes Favorites and Contenders – Who to Bet On at Pimlico

2011 Preakness Stakes Favorites and Contenders – Who to Bet On at Pimlico this Saturday, May 21st: Kentucky Derby runner-up Nehro was expected to be one of the favorites to win Saturday’s Preakness Stakes. However, the decision was made to have the horse skip the race and instead focus on the Belmont. With one of the frontrunners out of the mix, bettors need to know the horses primed to take advantage of Nehro’s absence.

Coming off a third-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, Mucho Macho Man enters this weekend’s race at Pimlico with 5/1 odds to win. The horse drew post No. 9, and although it isn’t the easiest slot, it isn’t a death sentence either. Mucho Macho Man has finished in the money in 8 of his 9 starts, making him one of the safer bets to be in the mix for the win down the stretch. With Nehro out of the picture, Mucho Macho Man figures to be the biggest threat to Animal Kingdom’s quest for a Triple Crown.

Another horse that is primed to take advantage of Nehro’s decision to skip the event is Shackleford. At 15/2 odds, he is being viewed as a top-five option by oddsmakers, and that is exactly the type of horse he has been throughout his career. Shackleford always seems to be in the mix whenever he enters a race, and he did spend some time out front at the Kentucky Derby before settling for fourth. Come crunch time at Pimlico, there is a strong chance Shackleford will have a chance to close the deal.

After disappointing bettors in the Kentucky Derby, Dialed In will have a chance at redemption in the Preakness. Without Nehro in the field, the horse is getting 4/1 odds to win. Only Animal Kingdom is getting better odds, and no horse in the field can claim the resume that Dialed In can. For whatever reason, the horse failed to live up to expectations at Churchill Downs, but on paper he should be a serious contender to win at Pimlico. Dialed In was expected to contend for the Triple Crown, but he will have to settle for the role of potential spoiler.

Last but not least, newcomer Astrology should be on the radar of bettors. After not running in the Kentucky Derby, the horse enters the Preakness Stakes with 10/1 odds to win. The horse was hampered by a stomach virus during the beginning of his racing career, but he has gone on to collect a win and three runner-up finishes in his last four starts. Of the horses that didn’t run at Churchill Downs that will be running this weekend, Astrology deserves the most consideration.
