Early 2020 Heisman Trophy Favorites – Justin Fields, Trevor Lawrence Lead the Field

Although the sports world remains in limbo as we deal with the coronavirus, we can still hold out hope that the 2020 College Football season is able to be held, at least in some capacity. With that in mind, it is time to take a look at the 2020 Heisman Trophy Odds and some potential future bets for the upcoming year, starting with a closer look at the frontrunners of the Heisman Memorial Trophy. Quarterbacks have dominated the award for the better part of two decades, and looking at the current favorites, the trend isn’t likely to change in 2020. Let’s look at the early 2020 Heisman Trophy Favorites.

The Favorites

Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State Buckeyes (+450)

A Heisman finalist a year ago, Fields is back to lead a high-powered offense for an Ohio State team that should be back in the mix for a Big Ten title and a spot in the College Football Playoff. In his first year as a starter, he threw for more than 3,000 yards and tossed 41 touchdowns compared to just three interceptions. Fields added 484 rushing yards and 10 scores, routinely extending drivers and making plays with his legs, especially in big games. He is the engine that drivers the Ohio State attack, and with a year of experience in the offensive system, another season of 50-plus touchdowns is likely on tap. Barring an injury, Fields is probably the best bet to be back in New York with a shot at taking home the Heisman Trophy.

Trevor Lawrence, QB, Clemson Tigers (+475)

A bit of a slow start seemed to derail Lawrence’s Heisman hopes last year, but aside from throwing eight interceptions, his numbers improved across the board in 2019 as he led the Tigers back to the College Football Playoff Championship Game. He had five touchdown passes compared to five interceptions after the first three games, but he tossed 31 touchdowns to just three picks the rest of the way. In addition to having a great year throwing the ball, Lawrence also showcased his athleticism, rushing for 563 yards and nine scores. It is hard to see a scenario where he doesn’t lead Clemson to another ACC title and into the playoffs, and after all he has accomplished in his collegiate career, he will have the lifetime achievement narrative working in his favor.

Spencer Rattler, QB, Oklahoma Sooners (+1000)

It may seem odd that a player with just 11 collegiate throws under his belt would have the third-best odds to win the Heisman, but Rattler has the pedigree and the system to make an immediate impact. The highly-touted, dual-threat QB lands is the frontrunner to lead Lincoln Riley’s high-powered offense, and over the past three seasons, that same system has helped quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray win the Heisman Trophy and made quarterback Jalen Hurts a finalist for the award. It seems inevitable that Rattler will post huge numbers and grab the attention of voters.

Jamie Newman, QB, Georgia Bulldogs (+1400)

Newman isn’t a household name after spending the last three seasons at Wake Forest, but he is a legitimate pro prospect with great arm talent and the ability to make plays outside of the pocket. In fact, he arguably becomes the best quarterback in the SEC from Day 1, and he will now be surrounded by all the elite talent the Bulldogs have to offer. Newman’s dynamic playmaking could be just what Georgia needs to get over the hump. If delivers 30-plus total touchdowns and helps the Bulldogs win the SEC and claim a spot in the College Football Playoff, Newman could go from graduate transfer to Heisman Trophy winner.
