2019 Week 12 College Football Picks: One-Loss Teams Who Could Make the College Football Playoff

2019 College Football Picks Week 112019 Week 12 College Football Picks – One-Loss Teams Who Could Make the College Football Playoff: While there is still a lot of football left to be played, Week 11 of the 2019 College Football season will certainly have some long-term ramifications on the College Football Playoff race. With the Alabama Crimson Tide and Penn State Nittany Lions falling from the ranks of the unbeaten, the race for the No. 4 spot in the playoffs is suddenly wide open.

As it stands, LSU, Ohio State and Clemson control their own destinies. If they take care of business, which is no guarantee, these three teams will be in the playoffs. Minnesota and Baylor can also be added to this list. If the Golden Gophers or Bears win out and finish as undefeated Power 5 champs, they will be in the playoff. Things get a little more complicated after that, and as we head into Week 12, it is time to take a look at the teams with a blemish on their resume with the best chance of claiming that final spot.

2019 Week 12 College Football Picks: One-Loss Teams Who Could Make the College Football Playoff

1. Alabama Crimson Tide

Is there any program that the selection committee loves more than Alabama? We already know the Crimson Tide don’t need to win the SEC to make the College Football Playoff based on what happened in 2017, and we could be headed down that road again. If Alabama takes care of business the rest of the way and LSU, Clemson and Ohio State all hold serve, I fully expect a one-loss Crimson Tide team to be selected ahead of a one-loss Pac-12 or Big 12 champion. Again, we already saw this same scenario play out a couple of years ago. The committee loves them some Crimson Tide.

2. Georgia Bulldogs

The Bulldogs currently occupy the No. 4 spot, and if they win out, they are a lock to be selected no matter what anyone else does. Running the table the rest of the way would mean a win over Auburn and a win in the SEC Championship Game, likely against LSU. The SEC champ is making the College Football Playoff, and Georgia has a chance take home the conference crown.

3. Penn State Nittany Lions

Despite the loss to Minnesota, the Nittany Lions aren’t dead yet. With Ohio State still left on the schedule, Penn State can notch a huge, resume-boosting win while also grabbing a spot in the Big Ten Championship Game. The Nittany Lions can pick up another big win in the conference title game, potentially avenging their loss to the Golden Gophers. As a one-loss Big Ten champ with a win over the Buckeyes, I think Penn State would jump ahead of the eventual Pac-12 champ and be able to sneak past a one-loss Alabama team, although I think it would be a coin flip against the Crimson Tide. LSU running the table and Georgia losing at some point would also be a must.

4. Oregon Ducks

If only the Ducks hadn’t puked away the opener against Auburn, they’d be cruising to a spot in the College Football Playoff. Instead, Oregon needs to win out and hope that they meet Utah in the Pac-12 Championship Game for a chance to picked up a statement win. The Ducks also need LSU to win out and claim the SEC title to eliminate Georgia from the picture, and from there, they probably have to win a beauty contest against Alabama. The conference title is supposed to be a tiebreaker when dealing with two similar teams, but as Ohio State found out in 2017, the selection committee isn’t above giving the Crimson Tide the equivalent of a sponsor’s exemption.

5. Utah Utes

You can basically take everything I said about Oregon and copy and paste it for the Utes. Utah needs to win out and take down the Ducks to win the Pac-12, and LSU needs to take Georgia from the equation. From there, it will be up to the selection committee, and since the Utes have an even worse loss the Ducks, I would be shocked if Utah gets the nod ahead of a one-loss Alabama team.

6. Oklahoma Sooners

An ugly loss to Kansas State has left Oklahoma in a tough spot. Yes, road games against Baylor and Oklahoma State will help their resume, and winning the Big 12 title would be another feather in the Sooners’ cap. Still, Oklahoma would have to do enough to jump the eventual Pac-12 champion and move ahead of the best SEC team that doesn’t win the conference title, and that’s assuming that LSU, Ohio State and Clemson finish as undefeated conference champs. The Sooners need a lot of pieces to fall into place.
