2019 College Football Preseason Rankings: Top 5 Head Coaches

1. Nick Saban, Alabama Crimson Tide

Dabo Swinney is breathing down his neck, but Saban still have five national titles to his credit, including four with Alabama. He’s also guided the Crimson Tide into the College Football Playoff in all five years of the system’s existence, making the title game in each of the last four seasons. Throw in his elite-level recruiting, defensive knowledge and commitment to dominating in the trenches, and it is easy to see why Saban’s programs have always had staying power. He has amassed a 141-21 record with the Crimson Tide, and if nothing else, he deserves to be at No. 1 because of how the longevity of Alabama’s dominance.

2. Dabo Swinney, Clemson Tigers

Fresh off a 15-0 season and his second national title in three seasons, the gap between Swinney and Nick Saban for the top spot is much closer than gap between Swinney and anyone else on this list. The Tigers have reached the College Football Playoff in each of the last four years, reaching the title game three times. Swinney has turned Clemson into a recruiting juggernaut, landing superstar quarterbacks like Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence and an endless list of defensive studs. The Tigers are positioned for a long run of dominance.

3. Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M Aggies

Believe it or not, Fisher is the last active coach outside of Nick Saban and Dabo Swinney to lead a team to a national title. His overall record sits at 92-27, and in his first year at Texas A&M, he posted a 9-4 record and instantly made the Aggies a dangerous team in the SEC. His track record as a recruiter speaks for itself, and Fisher’s first class with Texas A&M was ranked in the top five by nearly every service out there. If any coach can disrupt the balance of power in the SEC, it is Fisher.

4. Chris Petersen, Washington Huskies

I’m sure this ranking will be scrutinized, but don’t forget that Petersen turned Boise State into a legitimate threat to the traditional powers. Not to mention that his .808 winning percentage (139-33) is the best among active coaches. The Pac-12 has been given the short end of the stick as far as the College Football Playoff is concerned, but Petersen and the Huskies have one of the conference’s two appearances, and Washington has been to three straight New Year’s Six bowls. He’s also been able to deliver top-15 recruiting classes in each of the last two seasons. This guy is a winner.

5. Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma Sooners

The sample size is small, but you simply can’t discount what Riley has accomplished in his first two seasons at Oklahoma. He has piled up a 24-4 record, winning the Big 12 title and making the College Football Playoff both years. Equally as impressive, Riley’s offensive system has produced two different Heisman-winning quarterbacks. He is proving to be a genius as an offensive mind and play-caller, and he has been getting it done on the recruiting trail, as well. Riley and his high-powered offense aren’t going away any time soon.
