2019 College Football Picks and Predictions: New Year’s Six Matchups

2019 College Football Picks Week 12019 College Football Picks and Predictions – New Year’s Six Matchups: At the start of every College Football season, the ultimate goal for the top teams in the country is to secure a spot in the College Football Playoff and compete for the national title. While only four teams will earn that opportunity, the playoff games are just two of the major bowl games available. Even if it isn’t one of the semifinal matchups, an invitation to one of the New Year’s Six bowls is still a big accomplishment, reserved for the best teams in the country. With the 2019 College Football season set to begin, let’s see how the New Year’s Six bowls could shake out.

2019 College Football Picks and Predictions: New Year’s Six Matchups

Goodyear Cotton Bowl: Oregon vs. Boise State

UCF has been the Group of 5 team to beat the last couple of years, but I like the Broncos to finish as the top-ranked, non-Power 5 team and claim the automatic bid to the Cotton Bowl. Boise State has the talent in place to run the table in the Mountain West, and I think they can upset Florida State early in the year while the Seminoles are still digging themselves out of last year’s disaster of a season. I have Ducks ultimately losing the Pac-12 title to Utah, but with potential No. 1 pick Justin Herbert running the show for the Oregon offense, I think the Ducks finish as a top-10 team and get one of the available New Year’s Six spots.

Capital One Orange Bowl: Miami vs. LSU

With Clemson destined for a return trip to the College Football Playoff, look for the Hurricanes to grab the ACC’s spot in the Orange Bowl after reaching the conference title game. Miami should have one of the premier defenses in the country, and the offense should be more consistent under a new coaching staff. The Alabama roadblock will keep LSU from reaching the SEC title game and the College Football Playoff, but a more wide-open offense and talented defense should put the Tigers in the top 10 and earn them an at-large bid.

Rose Bowl: Ohio State vs. Utah

The Buckeyes have a new head coach and a new quarterback, but they are still a top-five team in terms of overall talent. That being said, I think this is the year that Jim Harbaugh finally guides Michigan to a win over Ohio State, putting the Wolverines in the College Football Playoff and relegating a one-loss OSU squad to the Rose Bowl. The Utes might be the most underrated team in the country heading into 2019, and while I wouldn’t rule out an undefeated season, I think Utah drops a game before securing the Pac-12 crown. The loss will keep them out of the College Football Playoff, but the Rose Bowl isn’t a bad consolation prize.

Allstate Sugar Bowl: Georgia vs. Texas

This is actually a rematch from last season, but unfortunately for the Bulldogs and Longhorns, I don’t see this season playing out any differently. Georgia has an NFL-caliber quarterback in Jake Fromm, an electric back in D’Andre Swift, one of the top offensive lines in the country and talent for days on defense, but the Crimson Tide will be waiting to derail them in the SEC title game. Texas has a Heisman contender in quarterback Sam Ehlinger and its most talented team in years, but beating the Sooners twice last season proved too much to ask, and I think the Longhorns settle for second best in the Big 12 yet again.

PlayStation Fiesta Bowl (CFP Semifinal): Clemson vs. Michigan

Between quarterback Trevor Lawrence, running back Travis Etienne, a loaded receiving corps and a defense that churns out NFL first-rounders on a yearly basis, I’ll be shocked if the defending champs aren’t sitting with an undefeated record heading into the College Football Playoff. After years of having the Buckeyes dash their championship hopes, Michigan’s decision to install a more explosive offensive system to support its punishing defense will put the Wolverines over the hump and into the playoffs as Big Ten champs.

Chil-fil-A Peach Bowl (CFP Semifinal): Alabama vs. Oklahoma

The SEC remains loaded with talented teams, but at the end of the day, Alabama still has the most overall talent, the fewest weaknesses, and the best coach in the country. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa is back after finishing second in the Heisman voting, and Biletnikoff winner Jerry Jeudy headlines one of the best receiving corps in the country. You don’t even need to ask about Nick Saban’s defense. Another SEC title should be on tap, and even if the Crimson Tide slip up once along the way, they will probably still have the resume to claim a spot. Armed with one of the most potent offensive systems in the country and their most talented defenses in some time, the Sooners should be able to run the show in the Big 12 once again and return to the playoffs for the third year in a row.
