2019 College Football Heisman Trophy Power Rankings: Week 8

2019 College Football Heisman Trophy Power Rankings2019 College Football Heisman Trophy Power Rankings – Week 8: Week 7 of the 2019 College Football season had its share of big matchups, and while the playoff landscape underwent some upheaval as Georgia and Florida suffered their first losses of the year and Texas went down for the second time, the Heisman race remained cloudy. A trio of quarterbacks have been sitting atop the rankings for several weeks, and after all three had big performances again this weekend, we are still waiting for a frontrunner to emerge. It is shaping up to be one of the more intense battles in recent memory.

2019 College Football Heisman Trophy Power Rankings: Week 8

1. Tua Tagovailoa, QB, Alabama Crimson Tide

He finally threw an interception, but Tagovailoa also threw for 293 yards and four touchdowns as the Crimson Tide knocked off a ranked Texas A&M team on the road by 19 points. He has now topped 2,000 passing yards for the year to go with 29 total touchdowns and a 96.1 QBR that leads the country. If Tagovailoa guides Alabama to an SEC title and a spot in the College Football Playoff, I’m not sure if anyone can stop him from hoisting the Heisman.

2. Jalen Hurts, QB, Oklahoma Sooners

Hurts did his part to help the Sooners knock off Texas in the Red River Showdown, finishing with 235 yards passing and three touchdowns and adding 131 yards rushing and another score. However, he also committed a couple of turnovers, and he didn’t have the type of overwhelming performance that would cement him as the unquestioned frontrunner for the Heisman. He’s up to 1,758 passing yards and 630 rushing yards with 25 total scores, and Hurts is still one of the main players in what is becoming an intriguing race of the top individual honor in college football.

3. Joe Burrow, QB, LSU Tigers

He had a chance to make a statement on a big stage in a primetime matchup between Top 10 teams, and Burrow didn’t disappoint. Facing a stout Florida defense, he completed 21 of his 24 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns and added more than 40 yards on the ground as the Tigers knocked off the Gators by a couple of touchdowns. He definitely closed the gap between himself and Tagovailoa and Hurts with his Week 7 performance, and with a showdown with the Crimson Tide and other SEC juggernauts still looming, Burrow will likely find himself at the top of the Heisman pecking order if the Tigers keep winning.

4. Justin Fields, QB, Ohio State Buckeyes

Fields doesn’t control the schedule, but with the three Heisman frontrunners all playing in bigger matchups, it wasn’t the best week for the Buckeyes to have a bye. His numbers have been outstanding all season, and he has turned Ohio State’s offense into a juggernaut in his first year as the starter. Unfortunately for Fields, I’m not sure he will have the same statement opportunities as the other top contenders. He will need to do something extraordinary against Wisconsin and Michigan to make the leap from Heisman finalist to Heisman winner.

5. Jonathan Taylor, RB, Wisconsin Badgers

His streak of 100-yard rushing games came to an end, but Taylor still managed to pile up 102 total yards and a couple of scores against a stout Michigan State defense in Week 7. He is up to 961 total yards and 18 touchdowns for the undefeated Badgers, and he has established himself as the best non-quarterback among the legitimate Heisman contenders. Taylor still has his work cut out for him if he wants to be more than a finalist, but a monster performance against Ohio State would give him a chance at making a serious push.
