A tip of the hat has to go to both Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh and Florida head coach Jim McElwain for agreeing to take this game to kick off their seasons. These are the type of non-conference clashes that make NCAA Football so great to watch and this game promised to be competitive and worthy of your time invested to watch it.

Michigan comes into this game as the -4 point favorite despite only returning 6 starters from last season’s 10-3 team. Michigan will really have it’s hands full offensively early on in the season as they only return one starter from the skill positions and that is junior quarterback Wilton Speight. Speight threw for 2538 yards and 18 touchdowns last season but still needs to improve greatly if Michigan is to come anywhere close to the unit that scored 40.3 points per game to finish 11th nationally last season. Michigan put up a lot of points last season but that was due to having great field position from their dominant defense as Michigan’s offense only generated 424.9 yards per game to finish a mediocre 58th nationally.

The strength of last season’s Wolverines team was the defense. It finished first nationally in points allowed at just 14.1 points per game and gave up the fewest yards per game nationally at just 261.8. However, this season presents a challenge for defensive coordinator Don Brown as just 1 starter returns from last season’s fabulous unit. Having said that, the cupboard is not bare as Harbaugh has done a superb job recruiting elite 5 star and 4 star talent to Ann Arbor and the 2 deep depth chart on defense is loaded with talented sophomore and freshman who are ready to jump into the fray and make names for themselves. Make no mistake, Michigan will once again have a formidable defensive unit that will be amongst the best by season’s end.

Florida enter this game in better shape than Michigan in terms of returning starters as they have 12 starters back from last season’s 8-4 team. Florida welcomes back 9 starters from their offense last season that ended up a woeful 107th nationally in scoring at just 23.9 points per game and 116th nationally in total yardage at a pedestrian 344 yards per game. The Gators will break in a new quarterback this season in hopes of getting a spark as freshman Feleipe Franks appears to be atop the depth chart. The redshirt freshman is a talented player and he will have some nice weapons to utilize including junior wide receive Antonio Callaway who caught 54 balls for 71 yards and 3 touchdowns last season as a sophomore.

The Gators defense returns 3 starters from last year’s impressive unit that finished 6th in the nation only giving up 16.8 points per game. The unit also was nasty in yards allowed as they ended up 5th in the country giving up just 293 yards per game. The Gators, like the Wolverines, have a slew of former top 5 and 4 star high school recruits on their 2 deep defensive depth chart so you can be rest assured that defensive coordinator Randy Shannon will once again have Florida’s defense amongst the best in the country this season.

Michigan vs Florida Free Pick and Score Prediction: Florida to cover the spread with +4 points but Michigan wins outright in a low scoring game, 23-20.
