Odds to Win the 2017 Mountain West Football Championship – Mountain West Football Predictions & Expert Picks

2017 Mountain West “Mountain Division” Prediction

1. Boise State Broncos(+325 odds to win Mountain West) – Head coach Bryan Harsin enters his 4th season at Boise State and has done a great job so far going 31-9 overall. The Broncos are coming off of another double digit win season as they went 10-3 last year but have a sour taste in their mouths after losing the Mountain West Championship Game 27-20 to Air Force and dropping their bowl game in a 31-12 loss against Baylor in the Cactus Bowl. Harsin will have his work cut out for him this year as the Broncos only return 8 starters with 4 on each side of the ball. The good news, however, is starting quarterback, junior Brett Rypien, is one of those starters coming back to run Boise State’s high octane offense. Rypien threw for 3,646 yards and 24 touchdowns last season in leading Boise State to the nation’s 15th best passing game at 298.3 yards per game and 38th scoring offense at 33.8 points per game. Boise State’s offense should take a step back this season with the amount of losses it suffered at the skill positions but Rypien is good enough to prevent the fall off from being too drastic. Defensively, Boise State is always formidable and 2017 should be no different. Boise finished 29th in scoring defense last season giving up 23.3 ppg and they have enough talent on the defensive depth chart to come close to that average again. 2017 Projection 10-3, 7-1 Mountain West

4. New Mexico Lobos(2017 Projection 6-6, 4-4 MW)
5. Air Force Falcons(2017 Projection 6-6, 4-4 MW)

2017 Mountain West “West Division” Prediction

1. San Diego State Aztecs(+280 odds to win Mountain West) – San Diego State head coach Rocky Long is 54-26 after 6 seasons as Aztecs coach and he is without a doubt one of the very best coaches in college football. It’s amazing that he is still at San Diego State as he surely could and should get a better job at a power 5 conference school to really show what he can do on the national stage. We are big fans of Long and we love the team he has coming back in 2017 at San Diego State. The Aztecs went 11-3 overall and 6-2 in the Mountain West last season and they have 11 starters coming back this season with 5 on offense and 6 on defense. The Aztecs finished 29th in total scoring at 35.2 ppg and 17th in scoring defense as they only gave up 20.2 ppg last year. The Aztecs are well balanced on both sides of the ball and appear poised to win the 2017 MWC Championship after finishing strong last year with a 34-10 beatdown over Houston in the Las Vegas Bowl. Keep an eye on blossoming junior quarterback Christian Chapman who threw for 1,994 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. He has the talent to be better and he should keep improving this season. 2017 Projection 10-3, 7-1 Mountain West
