Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart begins his second season on the job in Athens after going 8-5 in his first season. Smart had his team ready to close strong last season and they won 4 of their last 5 games including a 31-23 win over TCU in the Liberty Bowl. The Bulldogs return 16 starters including all 11 on defense this season so the expectations are high and deservedly so.

The Bulldogs offense has 5 starters back in 2017 from a unit that was terrible last season. There’s no point in sugar coating it. The Bulldogs finished a woeful 102nd nationally last year in points score per game at just 24.5 and 87th in total yardage at 384.7. The cause for hope rest in sophomore quarterback Jacob Eason being improved from his freshman campaign when he threw for 2430 yards and 16 touchdowns. Eason looked good at times but completely inexperienced a lot as well. However, a full year of experience under his belt should at dividends and he should be better and more consistent this year. The return of senior running back Nick Chubb(1130 rushing yards and 8 TDs in 2016) will help take some of the load offensively off his shoulders and help him relax.

Defensively, the Bulldogs are stacked. They have all 11 starters back from a unit that finished 35th nationally in points allowed at 24 per game and 16th in the country in yardage allowed at 327.5 per game. The talent on defense is top notch and there is no reason whatsoever this unit should not be dominant and one of the top 10-15 defenses in the entire nation this season. The defense could have as many as 6 players on 1st team and 2nd team All SEC defense including junior defensive lineman Trent Thompson and junior linebacker Roquan Smith. Both are studs.

Appalachian State Mountaineers head coach Scott Satterfield has to like his 2017 team as he has 12 starters back from last year’s 10-3 squad that won the Sun Belt Conference title. The Mountaineers have 6 starters back on an offense that can be improved from last year’s unit that ranked a mediocre 64th nationally in points score per game at 29.2 and 52nd in yards at 429.9 per game. The Mountaineers have their top two players back on offense in senior quarterback Taylor Lamb(2281 passing yards and 15 TDs in 2016) and junior running back Jalin Moore(1402 rushing yards and 10 TDs in 2016). Moore was the Sun Belt’s Offensive Player of the Year last season and should be the favorite to win it again this season.

Like Georgia, Appalachian State made it’s bones on defense last season. The unit was awesome as it finished 9th nationally in points allowed at 17.8 per game and 17th in yardage allowed at just 329.7 per game. The unit has 6 starters back in 2017 and should have at least 4 players on the 1st team All Sun Belt Conference Defense. The unit was the reason why they almost went into Knoxville and beat the Volunteers to start the 2016 season before ultimately losing 20-13 in overtime. That game showed the nation that this defense is legit and can play against the big boys and not just the featherweights in the Sun Belt.

Appalachian St @ Georgia Free Pick and Score Prediction: Take Appalachian Sate to cover the spread at +14 but for Georgia to win the game outright in a low scoring 19-13 game.
