Odds to Win the 2015 Mountain West Football Championship – Mountain West Football Predictions & Expert Picks

Mountain West “Mountain Division” Prediction

1. Boise State Broncos(-270 odds to win Mountain West) – Head coach Bryan Harsin was tremendous in his first season as head coach for the Broncos last season as he led Boise State to a terrific 12-2 overall record including a 38-30 win in the Fiesta Bowl over Arizona. This season Harsin welcomes back 17 starters including 9 on offense and 8 on defense for what should be another outstanding season for the Broncos. However, despite returning 17 starters and 9 on offense, the Broncos may struggle at times this season as they look to replace departed starting quarterback Grant Hedrick and running back Jay Ajayi. Those two players were responsible for over 89% of the Broncos’ offensive yards and over 92% of the touchdowns. Having said that, we expect Boise to fine at quarterback with sophomore Ryan Finley taking the controls while the running back position should sort itself out with a committee approach led by sophomore Jeremy McNichols and freshman Cory Young. Defensively, the Broncos won’t knock the socks off anyone physically or be world beaters overall in the national rankings, but we do expect them to be improved from the 48th overall unit nationally last season. The Broncos only lost one player from their defensive line and have an outstanding cast of returning linebackers and secondary standouts to plug in for 2015 so we expect Boise State to more than make up for any downgrade offensively with a much improved and more consistent defense. 2015 Projection 12-1, 8-0 Mountain West

Mountain West “West Division” Prediction

1. San Diego State Aztecs(+650 odds to win Mountain West) – Head coach Rocky Long has a very talented team returning for the 2015 season with 13 returning starters back in the fold. The Aztecs have 5 starters returning on offense and 8 on defense from last season’s 7-6 team that went 5-3 in the Mountain West. The Aztecs would have been much better last season if it got more production offensively as their defense was simply top notch. The Aztecs defense finished 16th nationally in total yards allowed last season and 13th in total scoring defensively as they simply played lights out for pretty much the entire season. This season’s defense should be every bit as good if not better as all 5 of their starters in their 3-3-5 defense are returning in the secondary. The only question mark for San Diego State this season is offensively. Last season’s unit was just 71st nationally in total yards and 88th in total scoring. The good news for Long and offensive coordinator Jeff Horton is Kentucky transfer Maxwell Smith looked very good in spring drills and the experienced senior from the SEC should be able to get San Diego State’s offense humming and complement the strong defense with enough points to turn those closes losses in games last season into wins this season. 2015 Projection 9-4, 7-1 Mountain West

5. San Jose State Spartans(2015 Projection 3-9, 2-6 MW)

2015 Mountain West Football Championship Game

Boise State Broncos vs San Diego State Aztecs – This should be an excellent title game with two strong defenses matching up. These two teams don’t paly each other in the 2015 Mountain West regular season so this game should be a fantastic clash between two excellent coach teams and talented rosters. Not much separates these two teams talent wise this season so we expect a close game throughout as neither defense will allow this game to get out of hand. In the end, however, we’ll give a slight edge to Boise State. Boise St 24 San Diego St 20
