2011 Texas A&M Football Predictions, Odds, Picks and Schedule – 2011 Texas A&M Aggies Football Preview

2011 Texas A&M College Football Expert Predictions, Picks, Vegas Odds and Schedule – Texas A&M Aggies NCAA Football Preview: Amid rumors that the school will be joining the Southeastern Conference next season, Texas A&M enters the 2011-12 season coming off a very successful year. Mike Sherman’s bunch finished the 2010-11 season with a 9-4 record. A Cotton Bowl loss to LSU to end the year wasn’t ideal, but regular season victories against Big 12 juggernauts Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas helped soften the blow. More importantly, 18 starters are back from last year’s breakout group, pushing expectations even higher this year. Considering the talent that returns, the Aggies just may realize those high expectations.

Texas A&M really caught fire last season when quarterback Ryan Tannehill was given the reins of the offense. The Aggies closed the regular season with six straight wins with Tannehill under center, topping the 30-point mark four times. His lone loss came against the Tigers in the bowl game, but Tannehill finished with more than 1,600 yards and 13 touchdowns while completing 65 percent of his passes. Needless to say, he enters this season as the full-time starter, and a 3,000-yard, 30-touchdown campaign isn’t out of the question.

Tannehill’s main target this year will be senior receiver Jeff Fuller. The two developed immediate chemistry last season, and in the first two games with Tannehill under center, Fuller caught 16 passes for 292 yards and four scores. Fuller finished the year with 12 touchdowns and more than 1,000 yards, and he could emerge as one of the premier receivers in the conference playing with Tannehill for an entire season.

The running game will be manned by Cyrus Gray. He topped 1,100 yards last season, averaging almost six yards per carry. Like the rest of the offense, Gray came to life when Tannehill got the starting job. He topped 100 yards in all seven games with Tannehill under center, piling up 10 of his 12 rushing touchdowns. Like Fuller, the sky is the limit for Gray with Tannehill calling the shot for an entire season.

Defensively, the Aggies were the second-best scoring unit in the Big 12 last season. They were also the stingiest unit against the run. Star linebacker Von Miller is now a Denver Bronco, but the rest of the defense is pretty much intact. Texas A&M gave up 20 points a game last season, and as long as the unit puts up similar numbers this year, the Aggies will be in great shape.

The schedule unfolds nicely for the Aggies this season with home games against Oklahoma State, Arkansas, Missouri and Texas. A road matchup against Oklahoma is probably the toughest game on the schedule, but the Aggies should be favored in all three of the remaining road contests. The Razorbacks are the lone out-of-conference foe that should be able to hang with Texas A&M, but again, it will be a home game for the Aggies. All in all, Texas A&M has a pretty favorable schedule for a team playing in the Big 12.

Plain and simple, the Aggies should be factors for the Big 12 title this season. Nearly every starter is back on both sides of the ball for a team that beat the Sooners last season. With an above average offense and a stout defense, Texas A&M should be able to handle SEC opponent Arkansas while the Razorbacks work out the kinks with a new starting QB. Taking down Oklahoma on the road will be a challenge, and even a home game against a loaded Oklahoma State offense won’t be easy. In the end, the Aggies probably come up just short of a conference crown, but this could still be the best team the school has had in recent memory.
